sizes need for combination wrench set on an old GM

Hi, I'm tool challenged in the 1"-2" sizes...I have a few but not all.  I've been looking around and some sets jump in 1/8ths other in 1/16ths but not always....If i was to buy all the combo wrenches I need between 1" and 2" what sizes would they be?  The fuss pot in me thinks  from1-2" in 1/16 ths, then another part of me thinks maybe a metric set one  mm  by mm would cover everything, I've often used my larger Imp sockets on the larger Metric bolts....does the opposite hold true? Any thoughts?

I think 1/16" increments up to 1" and 1/8" increments up to 1-1/2".  I would not spend the money for over 1-1/2" unless you get a very good deal, just buy it as you need it.  If you need a 2" wrench on the side of the road, you are already screwed

I think any nut or bolt over 1-1/2" is going to be too tight for a combination wrench anyway.

When you get to those sizes, you want good quality tools. You also want them to fit properly, forget the metrics on a 4104.

for some reason I run into 1 1/16" on a semi-regular basis.  But so far I have gotten away with a couple of big Crescent wrenches.  A very useful wrench is the one to turn the front pulley nut on the engine, get a nice long one for that!

I know I will eventually need to chnage the rear suspension bushimgs...one of them is above the rear air tank and does not have clearance for a impact driver...only a combo will fit in there....or a hammer/slugger wrench, don't know if I could hit it though, probably just use a cheater on it.  So the larger closed end wrenches don't hold up?  First I've heard of it....doesn't surprise me though, I've already broken a 3/4" cheater bar (was a lousy design though...I like the sliding "t"bar style this was the weak knuckle style).  Anyhoo I'm just looking about as I have nothing over 1" in open or closed wrenches, and while I am all rigged out in impact sockets, sometimes nothing beats a combo wrench and a hammer....maybe I should get thehammer wrenches I saw.

Don't know about a 4104 but on a 4106 the one wrench which seems to be a problem is a 15/16 for the starter bolts. And you need a really thin box end. I bought a cheapie and ground it down but probably a snap-on ($$$$$$$$$$$) would be your best bet for that one.

The starter on a 4104 is much more accessible than the 4106. No special tools needed.

And, I agree that you probably only need to go up to 1-1/2". I have found it useful, on more than one occasion, to have 2 of each size.
