Coolant Filter came with additive inside. Can too much additive hurt?

Hey all,

Just a quick question. After all the discussions on the "right and wrong" coolants lasy year I was concerned enough to add a full bottle of additive that is supposed to help prevent cavitation and inhibit corrosion in my 8V71 that my local bus shop recommended, I added a full bottle at that time per my mechanics recommendation. Well, in preparing for the trip to Yellowstone I am doing an oil change, fuel filters, air dryer dessicant cartridge and rebuild kit and a new coolant filter, the new coolant filter had a strange noise as if something was in it and the guy at the parts place said that this coolant filter from Wix had a corrosion protectant in it. So, is it possible to get too much additive in your coolant?

Please guys don't turn this into another long winded discussion on approved or unapproved DD coolants, everyone here knows that some of you feel really strongly about that issue,  but I am specifically asking for advice regarding additives only and whether it is possible to have too much additive in coolant or not.

Thanks for the help in advance.

Not going to hurt a thing Rick the filters are time released in mileage I do both on my 8v92 have for many a year

Yes, too much additive CAN hurt - but those filters normally only have a few units of inhibitor in them (trucks only have a fraction of the coolant in a bus with heating) and given the large volume of coolant we have, is not going to make any significant difference. If you are concerned, you can get it tested or use test strips.

BTW - regarding time release. May not apply to all types, but I read that they dissolve very quickly and are not time release.

Well Rick  I don't what to tell you the ones I buy from Napa  (WiX) are sold by the mileage factor I use the 20,000 mile and I when I change you can still rattle the filter.
My reasoning for a 20,000 mile filter is so I change it every 2nd oil change
I balance my system and install one and it keeps it pretty darn close and besides you can turn the filter off and on

good luck
