We pull a 1997 dodge ram 1500, its a 4x4 but we put the transfer case in neutral and put the truck back in park leaving the ignition switch on the first setting it pulls great 4 down.

I have an 05 Tacoma auto and put a driveline quick diconnect on.It was not cheap, but it has work great for five years with no problems.

I realize it's not full sized, but we have been pulling a '99 Ford Ranger extra cab 4x4 behind us for 8 yrs. with no problems...Cable

We pull Explorers, but the next toad will be an 07 or newer Ford Ranger 4x4 because those can have the electronic neutral transfer switch installed. It works
so nice in the explorers.

I have a driveline disconnect that I don't need any more, and would part with for less than the king's ransom they charge for new. We used it on the first Explorer.
You would have to have your driveline modified to use it, but that shouldn't be too difficult.

Fred,
Not sure why you don't want a 4X4 but it is very easy to tow. Transfer case is in neutral and transmission in park or 1st gear and you have a low range 4WD if you need it.  Jack
PS: sorry we missed ya last week. We will try to stop by on our way home (whenever that is).  Jack

my '03 Dodge 2500 5 speed manual Hemi 2WD is quite light (5700 empty and dry as I recall) and can be towed 4 down.  Has a decent payload as well, since it's 2WD and standard and few  options and 8800 GVWR.  Able to do some work, too, since it's rated to 17,000 GCVWR.

If a vehicle has a manual transmission can't you just put the transmission in neutral and go?  Does a manual transmission need lubrication like an auto?

If this is possible I assume you would want to do something to hold the shifter in neutral so it doesn't slip into gear.
