8V71 Mechanic leaves more questions than answers

The only real for sure way to do this is to tear the engine down and replace the parts that are worn (this is called an overhaul).  As compared to just replacing everything with new (this is called a rebuild).  Good Luck, TomC

Is it possible to do the Overhaul while the motor is in the bus? Sheila and I have been going to Yoga for the last year - that may help?

Not likely but our plans are firmly cast in Jello.  I have a potential project in Lloydminster - if that comes through then Edmonton is not out of the question.  Our current "plan" is to be in Airdrie around the September long weekend.

You might be on the right track when you said you might just change engines. Its a big job but not beyond reach. You'd also want to change trannys because your old bus had a Spicer in it, right?

Otherwise, like the other guys said, just run it. For the amount of miles most of us put on in a year you will probably get many years of service out of the existing 8V71 without doing anything but check the oil. If perfect you want, a bus conversion is probably not the answer........

Just run it and enjoy it!

I did 8500 miles in May on an engine that can hardly start in 90 degree weather without help. It would not be an easy trip for any bus. I pulled many long 8% grades, several 10% grades, and many 10,000ft plus peaks in the middle of no where and it never left me stranded. Just don't overheat it and it will keep going and going..............

I had my doubts, but now I am a believer in how tough they are even when "worn out".
