The PA speaker (along with the one in the spare tire compartment) can be connected to the PA mode of the CB radio or to the radio/CD player.  We have several sound effct CDs in our CD changer such as a steam locomotive taking off, steam locomotive bell and whistle, and a jet engine starting up. Just something for fun.  Jack

The engine & transmission are ready to pull as soon as I get the other caps & plags to seal the transmission cooler line. The dolly is in place and all ready to roll.  Jack

The old engine & transmission are out of the bus.  Here is a photo of them on the dolly I used to removed them.  Before installing the new engine, I have a few parts to swap on the engines and connect the transmission to the new engine.  Engine and transmission needs to be installed on my Mc-8 cradle.  I also plan to pressure clean & paint the engine compartment.   Jack

       I haven't posted any updates for a while.  I have just been taking my time, cleaning, making trips to pick up "stuff", cleaning, then more trips for the "stuff" I forgot, did I mention cleaning?  The new engine is now on the dolly I use to put it into the bus. I still need to finish cleaning and painting the transmission and engine compartment (hope to that today). I am waiting on a few gaskets for the engine components that need to be swapped. IF the gaskets arrive today, I hope to have the engine/transmission/cradle assembly ready to go back in the bus next week.  Jack

Jack, wish I had a dolly and all that flat concrete to work on. I just have to use tractors with pallet forks and work on dirt. But, I have tractors and dirt, and I'm used to it. Your 's sure looks good to me. Also, our bus tinkering at home is cheaper than a psychiatrist.

I rolled my 871 out to replace the clutch on my MC-5. Good idea to do everything you can find to do when its out. I was using a borrowed dolly from a bus company so I had to rush it out and back in again. But while I was at it i steam cleaned everything; all the grease above the drive shaft, etc. Then I painted the entire engine compartment and replaced all air lines and the power steering lines. Also ran the rack while the engine was out which does not matter in your situation. But definitely take the time to mess with everything you can.

    I wish I had a steam cleaner. I used my pressure washer to clean the engine compartment (back to the tag axle). I laid out a cheap tarp from Harbor Freight under the bus and out the door of my shop to prevent a mess in my shop when I pressure cleaned. Boy, was I a mess when I got done with that job. I could not get the tarp up under the rear drive wheels, so I quit cleaning at the tag axle crossover tube. I have repainted the engine compartment.
     I will be replacing all the OEM flexible air lines before the new engine goes in.  Todays project is to change the front cover on the engine to allow it to mate to my MC-8 engine cradle. I also hope to get the transmission reattached to the engine today.  Jack

Sounds good. Its a fun project; I wouldn't hesitate to do it again. I'd be afraid of tackling a repower like Brian Diehl's project, but swapping Detroits is a piece of cake. You gotta love flat concrete too. Its a real bonus.
