Coolant leak series 60

Starting to fill coolant, it is coming out of oblong hole on the side of water pump against the block.

I found a picture of a water pump online with this hole, so I know it is supposed to be there...
what is the purpose of the hole?

Http error 500 is what I get when I try to load pics

You will need to rebuild the pump or replace it.  The hole lets the water out instead of going in the engine when the seal goes bad.

Replaced with a rebuilt pump, solved problem
