The muffler on my 79 MCI5C has surface rust under the mounting straps. The muffler appears to be solid and in good condition.
I am thinking of useing a high tempature paint on it befor reinstalling. I did a little search and see that  Krylon among others has a 1000 degree paint.
Would the rust converters work on a hot surface? Most do not specify tempature in thier instructions.

How hot does a muffler get?   Has anybody tried painting one?  Is this a bad idea?

As usual all input, suggestions, criticism, wise cracks greatly appreciated.    Jim

I have used the brush on product on exhaust manifolds for a Chevy 350 V8.
Sandblasted the manifolds first, then brushed it on - excellent results.

Good old wood stove paint also works.  Cheap, available most everywhere and we have used it on headers.  Supposed to work on wood stoves that can actually get to glowing.  We used the paint brush approach also. Dunno what exact temp...yellow to dull dark red.  :) :) :)

The Krylon product works ok. I paint the inside of my Y pipes and elbows when new and it keeps them from rusting out. One I painted in 1979 is still going. One I did not paint was new in 1988 and just rusted out last summer. The outside rarely fails, the inside is a different story.

My experience with rust converters on hot surfaces has not been good.

They are latex base so I really didn't expect them to hold up under heat but they at least stopped some of the rust for a while.

I found this week end that Auto Zone is changing vendors for their paint products, I bought all the high temp header paint for the wood stove in the shop.
They say it will stand 2500' F.     @$ . 99 pr.can  ( regular price $ 8.00 ea.)
!!   Note!!     the older product has better coverage. It will also hold up well on headers!!!!    Your muffler wont get that hot.
