Hi Guy's,

Last week my water pump stopped working. I went in the plumbing compartment and banged on it and it started up.

The next time I opened the faucet, it wouldn't work again. I had a new spare in the compartment and installed it but,

it didn't work as well as my first one. It would hessitate a couple seconds and then come up in speed but, not as powerfull

as the first pump. I then took apart the first pump and removed the smart sensor, cleaned it and put it back together. I

then decided to reinstall it back in the bus. It worked perfectly until today. Same problem but, this time banging on it doesn't

make it work anymore.

Anybody have this problem?  Both are now over 3 yrs old and I'm sure the warranty's are not honnerable??

Maybe there is something else wrong that I'm missing..

Thanks

Nick:

My Shurflow model is the next level down  (Shurflow Smart Sensor 4.0 gpm), but it is fairly new and hasn't given me any problems (yet).  Here are a couple of thoughts, though....

When you cleaned the smart sensor (and I don't know what one even looks like), did it look like it really needed cleaning?  Shurflo says the Smart Sensor pumps do not have a pressure switch, so what is that beast? Shurflo's website doesn't specifically list it as one of their replacement parts.

If you have two identical units, it might be telling to swap the just the smart sensor parts on the two, and see what problems follow which units.

I noticed that the warranty period on these units is 3 years, so unfortunately you may have missed that cut-off. I guess it wouldn't hurt to contact them and try, however.
If you're going to be dumb, you gotta be tough.

Hi Wayne,

The sensor is an ABS solid state screw in sensor with 4 electrical prongs on the atmosphere side.

The presure side kinda looks like an eye of sort that I cleaned with a damp paper towel. The hole ios about 3/16" in diameter.

I just reinstalled the spare pump and the same flow problem exists. It kinda pulsates...??

I will try swapping sensors tomorrow. Thanks!

I had the same problems after 3+ years use on the 5.7,

Found that taking the pump section apart and cleaning the membranes helped to solve the problem, Used strong bleach on all the parts to remove the layers of invisible scum off the guts of the pump.

Then wiped the rubber parts with isopropyl alcohol and reassembled everything. Seems the normal scum from water builds up inside the pump section and will cause it to fail at random. A good flushing and opening a valve to let it run at full speed for a few minutes also helps it run better, My guess is the brushes in the motor get dirty after a lot of slow speeds and need to refresh byt running faster for a little while.

Just the way stuff happens, Otherwise I love those pumps...

Hi Dave,

I did the same thing last week and it still quit a week later.

I just got off the phone with Shureflo and they said they will replace both pumps. They will ship them tomorrow!

Seems like a great company.. They also stated as kwidd said, the design has changed and the presure is now adjustable.

Thanks all

Interesting.  I also had two of the newer "extreme" pumps that did the same thing... not responding... both had under 15 minutes of run time.
Unfortunately I tossed the first one but I kept the 2nd... just called Shurflo and yup, they said "send it in".

Seems like they got caught with their pants down on a good idea but not well enough tested prior to putting it on the market.  Oops...

The new pumps are different, they have adjustments screws on the smart sensors now.

All is great!
