When I got my bus (4104, 6-71 with spicer 4 spd) the tranny was very low on oil according to the fill stick.  So  I topped it up with 3 quarts of 50W.  Before I had done this the tranny and surrounding area were clean and dry.  Guess what?  The tranny threw out the oil I added and now it's a mess back there and the oil level is back near the bottom of the stick where it started.  The bus is 55 years old so there is a chance that the fill stick is not OE.  Here is my request.
Could someone who has a stable (re: oil ) spicer post the measurements of the hot and cold lines on there fill stick?  Thanks as always for your input, patrick.

10 19/32" from the case where the stick rests to the hot mark, and 11 14/32" to the cold mark, is how mine measures.

My trans has a high level plug on the side, fill it till it comes out the plug and thats the level.
Plug is same hight as the full mark on the dip stick.

Zub,

Mine does/did the same thing so I just run it near the "Low" mark and it stopped throwing oil.

hmmm very interesting.  I wonder what the long term effects of running it low are going to be.

NOTHING! if it's hitting the mark "it's int the range"! If it doesn't show up at all, then it's time to worry about the damages THAT WILL OCCUR! FWIW ;D  BK  ;D

Just remember there could be a leak that is causing it to drop that low.  It would be a good idea to find out exactly where the oil is coming out.

Sub,

I've driven it 68,000 mi in three years. If anything happens to the trans I'll let you know!

Don't worry, when a 4104 leaks oil from anywhere it all ends up on the rear engine cover so it is no problem to know when it happens!! This includes the trans.

It is easy to find a trans leak because the whole bottom is easy to see. I found a leak in mine at a small connection that had a copper tube cut off and bent. I removed it and installed a plug.
