Anybody fighting these leaks.  I would like to know the tricks to stopping these leaks.  I am pretty sure I have more than one.  Bill T.

I am a dummy when it comes to this subject but I think maybe I have one in my MC-5A. The shop that does my service had just changed the fluid and filter. When I got the bus home I noticed a puddle under the bus (tranny fluid). So I returned with the bus and got in the pit with the mechanic, we found the filter cover was the source, when he removed it the first time it had a silicone sculpture around it but after cleaning it off and reinstalling it leaked. It was warped and we straightened it, reinstalled and no leak.

Maybe this is worth a look? Hope this helps.

the usual place these transmissions leak is from the shift lever shafts.
the bushings wear and the seals get hard with age.

you can replace the bushings without taking the trans apart, just drive in new bushings (there is enough room on the shaft for the old and the new ones) and then install new seals

also run 50 weight synthetic racing oil in the 4 speed spicer

Chris,

You are right.  I just went out and took a look with a flashlight.  Looks like I have a leak at the 1rst Second Shaft.  3rd 4th looks ok, but there is a leak at the angle drive housing and the end bearing where oil is dripping at each location.  There is also one at the output shaft housing.  Except for the 1-2 shaft, the other leaks are all at the very bottom of the trans and there is no evidence of any leakage coming from above.

that is the main reason I put the cummins in my 06. I never had a leak with the 8-71 but when I switched to the 6v-92 thats when my leaks started. I removed the transmisson 3 times to have it re-sealed with the same results.I come to the conclusion that the 92 had way to much torque for the 4-speed.(92 with G-95s) I think the case was distorting. Whew!  I hope this old high block 671 with 4 valve head and N-65 injectors is not overtorquing that spicer case!!!???  I suspect previouos assembly methods for the leaks except the 1-2 shifter shaft.  Personally I like Utra Copper which seals positively in any application I have tried it on.  I have even used it in place of gaskets.  It is made by Permatex and you can get it at local auto parts stores.  Shelf life is about a year in the tube though, so it won't cure after that.  Or if does, it will be after a long time.  I was hoping someone here would tell me that this isn't a big deal and that it can be done with the trans in place, just removing the side piece between the bumper and engine compartment header.  And then drain the box, remove or move the necessary pieces and reseal it and bolt it back up.  The good part about this coach is that there are no DD leaks period.  After all the references to normal DD leakage, this one doesn't leak.  Now if I can just get the trans. leaks stopped this bus might be presentable in places that leaks are not welcome!  Bill T.
