MCI 1979 871 det after setting all winter, I started bus up this summer and engine heat up to 210 degrees engine shuts down.Theirs water in radiators, could it be water pump??????

makemineatwostroke

happydays, the water pump is gear driven and some times they do shear the key on the pump. how long does it take to shut down.If you have daul tempature gages watch and see if one side is hotter than the other if this the case the thermostat is stuck on that side  good luck

happydays

yes I did noticed that one side gets hotter, thanks I didn't even think about that.

You can feel the pipes and tell what is flowing water. If its full of water the pipe across the  back will get hot to touch. If the water pump is working the radiator will be hot. If its a pump, the radiator will be cold.

Thanks for the info, but when was I was running bus pipe on right side wasn't getting hot like pipe going to radiator on the left.

Temperature of 210°F (if it is accurate reading) is way too high at idling and level road driving. Try never to go over the actual reading of 200°F while climbing hill. You need to pin point your problem....it could be your gauge is incorrect temperature and more.

As been an auto & truck & farm mechanic of the late 40's to 90's, that I would have done as per above posts. However, since IR Temp Gun been out for a few years...are a must have tool to:
1)   Check gages accuracy.
2)   Left & right bank comparison of wherever.
3)   Engine exhaust manifold for injector problem.
4)   Turbo inlet & outlet on Chassis Dyno.
5)   Turbo radiator of comparison the inlet to outlet on Chassis Dyno.
6)   Wiring for either over load or too small gage.
7)   Wiring connection for loose or poor connection.
8)   Tires for low tire pressure and mismatch tread wear on dual.
9)   Radiator of the top and bottom as well tubes comparison check.
10)   Heater radiator.
11)   A/C system.
12)   Refrigerator.
13)   Hot water system.
14)   Brake drum.
15)   Wheel bearing.
16)   Fuel line/tank.
17)   Power steering fluid.
18)   Battery case.
19)   Transmission fluid.
20)   Even to check passing vehicle's tire temp while you're driving.
21)   Is coffee too hot to drink?
22)   Anywhere your mind wants to know.
23)   In other words, it is a tool of many unknown uses.

Many of them on market for $80 but check e-b for Raytek MT4 at 32.99 + shipping. You do not need higher temp gun than this and it the most popular on the market.

While you're at the cooling system, have a pressure check radiator cap and system for leak or leaks at 15 psi for preventive maintenance away for home. A good shop can do this or you can purchase one.

I live in kalkaska, (Gods country) 9 miles east kalkaska just off highway 72. Bus still setting outside, but hope to have barn floor done this fall 36x52. I'm putting in floor heating from wood stove outside. Then in November I'm retiring and start working on bus full time.I understand somebody from Cadillac not to far from me is rebuilding a GMC. One thing my favor, thought I would have to replace engine when I bought this bus  cause they said it smokes when you start it. But when I went to pick it up it was little black smoke clear up after 100 miles. The trip was 1700 miles never added oil. I couldn't believe it,oil down little over half way on stick between marks....Well I'll be asking questions, but I got get some manuals this will help a lot. If your in the area stop by,Ill be needing all the info I can get.....later

happydays, when i got my 4106 and started it up it smoked up the whole neigborhood and would continue to do so until i drove it a few miles then it would clear up, the bus had sat in the lot of former owner for a year, we took one trip the first about 400 miles and it quit doing the smoking thing, i think whaen they sit the rings are probly sticky, i would not be alarmed until some trips are completed and see where you are at, just a thought, i thought at the time i had a bad engine but turns out it was and still is a very good one

Hi happytime: What was the temperature while traveling to home from Texas? If it was cooler....check leaks using radiator pressure checker. You could have pump's seal leak now or whatever that cause coolant level too low to cause air in system to prevent good circulation. You may not have low coolant level. You could barrow "rad pressure checker" from your friendly repair shop. Pump it to 15 psi and look for possible leaks. If no leaks, then bleed all high points of the cooling system until no bubbles. This a process of limitation for future problem.

I believe you have a good engine from your report.

Tell how long the "short time" you have it?

I my home town is Owosso, Michigan but living SC now & retired.

Wait for your answers...I and others will try to help till it corrected.

Not to denigrate any other answer here, but it took me 20 minutes to get any information out of you in the chatroom for what kind of bus, what year, auto or stick, or even you name.

As far as I could glean from your minimal information, you have been running your automatic transmission like a car... sorry, that isn't the way these transmissions were built.

Maybe you would do well to give the members here a lot more information than, "my engine is running hot! how do I fix it!"

Geez, sorry to sound so negative, but wonders cannot be worked by the mere mortals here, and they cannot read your mind. We need information!
