MCI-9 Fuel tank question

Yesterday as I was putting a few drops (all I could afford) of fuel in the tank.  I heard a motor running, in the fuel tank area, that I have never heard before.  Really hear it well when the fuel tank door is open.  Checked all my switches, nothing effected this.  Is there a fuel pump in there somewhere that is getting ready to bite the big one on me?  If not, what could this be.

Hi Bill,

No, not that I know of....

Was the bus running?  If so, it may have been the return line from the engine making the sound. The presure is quite strong

comming back to the tank.

I've heard the same thing on my bus.  Bus was always running when I heard it, but I to, also assumed it was a fuel pump.

Yes, Nick,  bus was running.  It sounded like a blower or pump.

Hi bill,

I had my bus running today, it's definitely the return line..

I felt it and it was vibrating pretty strong and sounded like an electric pump.

Aluminum tanks must intensify the sound.

Now I wonder if something is working loose, or I just didn't "hear" it before.

Whenever fuel level is very low...it will make rumbling sound from large aluminum tank's side walls as well return line gear pump noise. As long you don't hear metallic noise such as large side panel viberating against near by metal framing....I wouldn't worry about it. Nearly empty tank turn into a "speaker" when you open fuel cap.

My does whenever fuel is low level.

Thanks for the info....  Just for the record,,, My tank is 3/4 full.  For the time being, guess I won't worry about it.

Why would one burn fuel, for no forward movement, while sitting at the fuel pumps, filling the tank?

Another fright that would have been avoided...

I was only pumping 25 gallons, that's all I could afford...    Doesn't take long to pump 25 gallons. Not worth turning off the motor.
