Help-Changing starter rotation

Does anyone know what it takes to change the rotation of a Delco 42MT from a CW to a CCW rotation.
I assume it is just a rewire between the brushes and the field coil or a brush plate change and changing the 11 tooth gear in the bendix. Is the bendix gear from a 40MT starter a direct replacement. Are these the only 2 changes needed?
Thanks for any input.

craig,  My advice is take it to a rebuilder and have them reverse the rotation if it can be changed.  I think that some can and others can't.   ???
as you slid down the banister of life, may the splnters point the other way

Thanks Gomer.
The two re builders I have used for the last 35 years, one has down sized and does not have anyone left that knows how and the second is out of business.
I have not bought a MT42 yet. I want to change from a 40MT. If I already had a 42MT I would already have it apart. I want to understand what makes it tick. I could take a spare 40 apart to see how to change the rotation. I have converted single directional DC motors to bidirectional, so can figure it out.
Just thought someone might know the answers.
Thank you for looking.

Craig C,

I would love to see some pics and a description of your 4104. 8V71TA V730 conversion sounds very cool.

As I understand it, CCW starter has a different armature and bendix gear drive.  In other words, best to just buy a CCW starter right off.  42MT is good to 14.8 liter engine.  Good Luck, TomC

Craig, the armature has a different spline twist for the bendix drive on cw and ccw starters, the older ones had a straight spline

CraigC

Tom and 2 stroke that is the info I was looking for. Thank you!

Craig, try www.waiglobal.com.  They have new starters for less than 300.oo.  I bought a brand new starter for a perkins diesel for less than the price of a rebuild.  John

After looking at WAI Global at the starter parts, the gear drive, armature AND field windings are different between CW and CCW- in another words except for the case and bendix solenoid, everything is different between the two rotations.  Not quite like a 3 phase motor that can be reversed by switching two of the wires.  Good Luck, TomC
