any idea what mileage can be expected from a Volvo VE7

Depends on the loose nut behind the wheel and how much lead in the shoes.  It will be on par with other engines of that year vintage and horsepower.  Good Luck, TomC

so whats that mean to me?  400k?

TomC

Are you talking fuel mileage or life of the engine mileage?  Most should go at least 500Kmi before overhaul.  Series 60 type big blocks are million mile, with the new DD15 being a 1.2 million mile engine.  Personally, would stay away from Volvo-expensive to fix and not too many repair facilities.  Good Luck, TomC

I was talking engine life.

Volvos are quite common here on the Right coast......and now that they own Mack there are 5-6 authorized shops within 2 hours of me.

Kristinsgrandpa

That's fine as long as you stay at home.

What happens when you go to the center or left coast-I live on the left coast and I know that Volvo just closed down most of the dealers in L.A., so there is only one now in Fontana.  Good Luck, TomC

Give Walt Mitchell a call 302-249-1688 cell, he bought a road tractor a couple of months ago with the volvo motor. you can tell him that I told you to call. He is getting 7 mpg pulling 80k of chicken up and down the roads

Sorry I need to know, how many chickens is that?  Tom Y

Volvos are good engines, if you're not more than 100 miles from home, should work fine for you.  Good Luck, TomC

Gomer,  Tekebird is a juvenile by busnut standards.  He is compared to most of us...old as dirt describes quite a few busnuts!   Reckon I'm an "Elder."    :) ;) ;D
So as to not get too far 'off-topic', Southeastern Freight has a huge fleet of Volvo day-cabs and the drivers seem to like the trucks...as much as anyone could 'like' a city delivery tractor.  They are not causing them any problems.  300 HP engines...not sure about the engine model.  I'd guess that if Southeastern would buy one, almost anyone would be safe with a Volvo.
I wonder what sort of a bus repower they would make every time they bring freight.  The engines are smooth running.
As Tom sez, there might be issues with Volvo service in some areas...but here in Charlotte they have plenty of service opportunities.
When I was in the marine business, we sold and serviced Volvo Penta stern drives.  The Volvo diesels were almost too expensive to repair.  If it broke, we repowered.  However, they were excellent powerplants for years and suffered a ton of abuse before they broke.   Their parts were incredibly expensive.  I'd assume that situation is getting worse with the dollar vs euro exchange rate.
If replacement parts are still all made in Europe, I'd rather have an S60 or an ISM and Allison.
How many miles can one put on a dumptruck anyway?   Everything but the engine will wear out first...?
