Project: Original Interior Lighting

I have decided to keep my original interior lighting.  I could not bring myself to do away with the original fixtures.  They just have too much character, especially the heavy glass.  They are in pretty rough condition as far as the finish goes.  The glass is filthy and the fixture has some pretty heavy oxidation.

I soaked the glass with some detergent and water and they will come pretty clean.   As far an the trim that holds the glass in place I used some Autosol polish as started rubbing.  It took about a hour to do one fixture.  The polishing removed the oxidation and most of the pitting.  I may go back over it with a small buffing wheel and see if it will clean up some of the left over pitting I could not get by hand.

It was a pretty good project to do indoors on cold short days.

I attached some pics for your viewing pleasure.

If the glass didn't come completly clean, try some glass stove top cleaner.  It has a light abrasive but will not scratch the glass.  Sometimes tooth paste will make the glass shine too.

I think I have several of those lenses brand spanking new in the parts room

Most of the lenses are in good shape, they were just covered with the usual film of filth.  The aluminum fixture is what required the most work.  I've got 5 more to clean.

The cool thing about them is that they are real glass, they will look sharp when I'm finished with them.

They just don't make fixtures like that anymore.

Are you planning on putting them back in the original positions or are you adapting them to fit other locations?

They are going back in the original locations which location wise works out well with my floorplan.  I am going to try out some LED bulbs for them though.  I have given thought to acquiring some more and using them in other locations.  I want to keep the styling in line with the bus itself.  At first I wanted to pretty much change everything but as with many things the more I am around it the more I appreciate the original design and construction.

I agree that there is some coolness to the original design stuff.  It's kinda neat keeping some things to remind you that it is a BUS you are staying in.  Plus, why not recycle and keep this stuff out of landfills?  Keep up the good work!
