Leaking water pump - Did I install it wrong?

I installed a Reliabilt water pump on my Series 60 last September.  I replaced it because it seemed to be weeping both oil and coolant.  It was also a lot easier to do with the aftercooler and radiator removed to replace the radiator core.

I was trying to fix a bad compressor governer today and noticed the bottom hose coming out of the water pump is coated in oil.  Could I have installed the water pump incorrectly so as to cause oil to leak?  It seems it can really only go in one way since the gears have to mesh.  I also noticed the water pump is as rusty as the turbo even though the water pump was painted when I got it.

I dread having to replace the water pump if it is bad.  It was a royal pain even with the radiator and aftercooler removed mostly because the tranny cooler and bracket have to come out.  It would be double or triple the work to replace it with the radiator in place.  I would almost be tempted to take the bus to BK to do it, but the fuel money could pay a mechanic for a day to do it locally.

Hi Brian,

Have you ran the engine much since the pump install?

Maybe it just has not seated the seals yet..

Good Luck

Over 4,000 miles since replacement with lots of grades in those 4,000 miles.  I've read forum postings here and on BNO about rebuilt water pumps sometimes going bad, but folks also reported new ones having the same issue.

Belfert, did your seal ring on the backside of the water pump stay in place when you installed the new pump

Or did you accidently pinch, nick, or slice the sealing O-ring while putting it back in? theses are all fairly common problems that occur regularly if you're not careful during the re-installation process. Of course it's also possible that it was leaking somewhere else and running down to where your seeing it (in other words the pump may not have been the problem, and it still exsists maybe). I'd use some brake cleaner and clean everything possible as good as possible. Then take it out and drive the heck out of it (go somewhere for a day or weekend), and periodicaly check it while driving it and then really check it when you get back. FWIW that's my 2 cents worth and keep the change!
