Bob,

I'm still trying to figure out why this must be MCI specific?

The Detroit Diesel you are using was non specific to many vehicles.

As long as the muffler will fit and meets the back pressure requirements of the engine manufacturer, why worry about it?

For a 71E (4 valve) the back pressure recommendations are as follows:

1200RPM 1.0 full load, 1.5 no load, 1800 3.3 full load, 2.1 no load, 2100 4.0 Full Load 2.6 No load all in In. Hg.

Until you start working with Turboed engines, the back pressure isn't going to be that critical, and even then, it looks like the high end limits are going to be in the 2.5"Hg area.

Good luck.

Bob according to my parts manual  the muffler part # is either 8C-20-1 for units prior to no. 5801  and part # 8C-20-16 starting with unit # 5801. Don't know if you had these #s when you contacted MCI before, but maybe these will help you. Good luck and keep us posted......i am going to have to replace my muffler in 2-3 months so i am interested in how you make out. ;D
Used to own a 1968 MCI 5A and a 1977 5C.

Ed, it's almost midnight so I not only don't have some of the numbers handy....I doubt the inclination.

But tomorrow, I promise, I will run the MCI numbers again.  I might not have the right Parts Manual for m'old darlin'. Shucks...I'm fighting Altzeimers on a daily basis....don't expect too much!

With tongue in cheek......
