Insurance on a shell

Hi again,
I've called a couple of places including AON (thanks for posting that!) but I haven't found someone who seems to understand what I've got and as soon as I say it's not converted I'm going to convert it or it was once a mobile medical unit they say they can't insure it.  I need insurance so I can drive it home.  What do I need to say to the insurance agent to get coverage?

Go to the Camping World web site, then follow the links to the GMAC Insurance. Say it's a bus in the process of conversion.
Done deal. (Liability only)
Then, once you make enough progress to register it as a motorhome, call GMAC and your rate will drop like crazy.
I pay GMAC $68 a year to insure my coach. (Liability only)

If you are not clearly asking for liability for a tag, They assume that you want collision, PIP, Comprehensive and replacement value.

( And if it isn't on their list of insurable vehicles it creates a problem for the underwriter unless they handle bus conversions as a matter of fact. ) I got mine under the Motorhome catch with a specialty vehicle package. ( $180 a year )... BUT my insurance company won't write any more new policies under that older term. )

Oh.. And good luck getting full coverage after you get it converted. There are all kinds of kinks and apparaisals to that part.

Hi try Brenda @ 513 891 4400 we use them ,may be not the cheepest but she knows how to get insurance, we also have tow package & when the rear axal let go on the I10 @ 0dark 30 the one tow payed for the cost plus, will be renewing when its time, this the ins that fmca are with, hope this helps,Darren.

Calumet, we had the same problem (and a flight to catch) and ended up with a very expensive commercial package. Unless you are Canadian, I can't help much more than that, though. Several options are available once the conversion is completed (whatever that means).

Try calling 1-800-776-4737.  This is Progressive Insurance's claims service number, but it may work getting you connected with this company and they MAY insure/bind your shell sossss you can get a trip permit and drive her home.  Also have your own agent try Progressive, which is what I did.

Progressive is $expensive$ but doable.  I got initial insurance sossss I could get a trip permit---NO PROBLEM.  Just tell them it is a motor coach as I did.  In my state of Oregon, actually getting the permanent RV license plates and title was also easy, but another story.  Good luck.

Hi Calumet,
All it took to cover our bus, for the one day trip home, was a call to our insurance agent. He asked for the serial number, year, make, and model and said we had a binder to bring the bus home. He also explained that we had 30 days of automatic coverage under our policy when we changed vehicles. This was in Minnesota. It would be helpful to know what state or country you are in (other than the state of confusion, LOL) so that someone in your state could offer you advice.

Calumet Coach is the name of the manufacturer...since bought up... and bought up...and bought up by what is now Oshkosh.
Once I get the title in hand I will post pictures...until then I don't want to jinx it.

WOW...that must be some driving record you have! LOL

I can't understand that rate for liability only. I'd call CW/GMAC again and see if another agent can do better. Make sure you use the Camping World link for the best deal as a coach converter.

I got three quotes for liability only for my Scenicruiser, $180.00 and 230.00 and 310.00.  They were Erie Ins, Nationwide and another I don't remember.  My agent(s) know what I have and what I am doing, I think that local knowledge meens a lot!

The guy who bought my RTS was having trouble getting the 'Good Sam's' people to get off their duff and get him insured so he could fly out here and drive his new bus home. I told him that Progressive Insurance offered on the spot online insurance. He ended up signing up for Progressive on their website and being able to print out a binder on the spot. When he arrived to pick up the bus he told me that he also saved money. Progressive was cheaper than Good Sams.

My Insurance is farm bureau which is probably not in your state but my agent just took the vin # year and model and listed it as a rv $140 a year just liability, cant beat that!
