Jake Buffer Switch

Jake Buffer Switch

I finally got my engine to idle.  Had someone help adjust the governor so now the engine is running fine.
I think the jake buffer switch needs adjustment.  I have power from the dash switch to the buffer switch.  I tested the jakes by using a jumper directly to the jake wire. I could hear the solenoids clicking.

However with the throttle in the completely closed position, the power does not go through the buffer switch.

Should I screw the buffer switch in until the switch closes?  Will adjusting it affect the idle?
     Thanks,   Iver

Hello Iver,

The buffer switch should be set to inguage the selonoids at speed, when my jakes are inguaged, they hold on until 18 mph then cut out.

So, at idol, the buffer switch is not inguaged... you need rpm's to activate the buffer.

I know it took Keith Crawford about 40 min's to get my buffer switch set just right. I think it takes a trained ear...  Not sure?

Good Luck

The purpose of the buffer switch is to permit the Jakes to operate when the throttle is not depressed.
With the idle set by the governor to a specific rpm you select (525 comes to mind) the buffer switch is adjusted inward until the contacts just close.

This is checked by placing an ohmmeter across the contacts and checking when they just close. The engine rpm should increase no more than 25 rpm during this adjustment. Make sure you tighten the buffer switch lock nut. It probably will change your settings.

Check several times by opening and closing the throttle. The engine should return to the same rpm as noted in the second step, and the buffer switch contacts should be closed.

There is no magic required, just pay careful attention to the details. If you do not have the Jacobs installation/instruction manual, then the first thing you should do is get it.

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body. But rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, a good Reisling in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming:  WOO HOO, what a ride

Hi IVER,

What engine do you have?

Here is a installation pdf for the 8v92

Hi

Just read the information sheet and there is a differance between the stick or automatic.

The automatic, set up will cut the jakes out at 1000 rpm's, so at idol they will not be inguaged.

Thanks for the info and manual files.
The engine is a 8v92 and was equiped with the Jake.   Only the buffer switch was not adjusted.

I will  use the method Richard suggested first and see what happens.
      Thanks again,  Iver.
