Hi folks, how about some input on propane generators?  Pros, cons, etc.
I am thinking is is the cheapest fuel we use...and runs cleaner to boot!  I do know about making the fuel tank area vent downward in case of leaks.
Thanks in advance!

Jack,

For me it is an option as I will have propane onboard for cooking and water heating anyway.  More trouble but the fuel stores really well.

I have one that I am using at the present time. I am satisfied with it's performance. It starts easy runs clean and noise level is a little lower than with gas. It's uses a little more propane than a gas gen would but it's not an issue. Kent

The only real issue is having a larger than normal propane tank-which is bulky.  Other than that, propane engines run practically forever.  Good Luck, TomC

Jack,

I've been using an Onan 5500w Marquis LP for more than 3 years, and feel REALLY good about my choice.

Propane is easily found most places in the US, and if you shop, can get a great deal on it. Even with all the gyrations gas and diesel have done for the last 4-5 years, my propane costs have remained fairly constant...for the last 2+ years it's hovered right around $1.85.
Now granted I do have a large LP tank for a conversion...86 gallons...but there is no reason you couldn't have great success with a smaller tank.

As I see it...
PROs: Cheap fuel, runs forever, exhaust isn't too foul, fuel storage stability.

CONs: Availablity of fuel, hard starting in VERY cold weather. (<20*)

Hope that helps.
