Leaking Axle Seal

We are in a '78 Eagle in Myrtle Beach approximately 1300 miles from home.  I have a rear axle seal (I think) leaking.  It is slinging rear lube from the lug nuts onto the stainless wheel covers.  Could someone recommend a facility in South Carolina for repair or the risk related to driving home with leak as is?  Immediate feedback appreciated.  Thanks.

Hi Bob, I don't know of anyone in SC, but please take the time to get it fixed before driving home.  You have no braking ability on that drive wheel once lube is found coming out the drum.

Bob I just spoke with Dallas (he used to live there & knows the area pretty good), he said there ain't nobody that does heavy duty repair work in Myrtle Beach! But he said theres a place just out side of Conway about 3 miles out on the west side on the left side of the rd, that does heavy duty repair work! He said they used to have  a couple Eagles, MCIs and such sitting around there! I'd guess that would be your best shot!

There several truck shops in and near Wilmington.  We're about an hour north on 17 from M.B.  There's also a charter facility about an hour away from here.  If you need names / numbers of some of these shops, send me an IM and I'll look 'em up for you.  I'm not familiar with them personally, but I do go past a repair place each day that always has buses and trucks in their shop.  I'll check for any replies / IM's from you throughout the day when I have time.  Good luck!

They are in Conway, not MB.
Lot's of companies advertise as Myrtle Beach when they are actually somewhere else in the area. People have heard of Myrtle Beach, no one ever heard of Conway, Little River, Loris, Aynor, Mullins, Tabor City, etc.

I've been to Sunway's shop in Myrtle Beach.  It is a nice clean shop.  They didn't do any work for me.  I was there because the were selling all the Eagle parts they had because they didn't run Eagle anymore.  Give them a call.

Question,,, is it the drive axle, or the tag.  My tag was leaking and it was an easy to replace window type seal, the window had cracked and threw gear oil all over the place. If you have the window type it will be easy to check the oil level.

Not sure if this is your case or not.

Jeans bus service and Juan at Deltaways in Greeneville SC.  Get a temp gun and keep an eye on bearing temp

if its the outer seal you could attempt yourself,  keep sand out, but not too bad a job.

Is it leaking out of the outer hub?  If so, that's an easy fix that any heavy shop can do.  Look inside to see if the brakes are wet.  If not, then you're in luck.  If they are wet, get them fixed right away, since brakes and oil do not mix.  Good Luck, TomC

Many thanks for all the responses.  Myrtle Beach is not the place to be in need of repairs on old or newer coaches.  I was warned by several people that you would be taken advantage of in your larger diesel services companies.  Sunway Charters will not do outside work.  I have located an independent in the Conway area that will handle the repair although I do not really get a comfort in the conversation I had with him even though he was recommended (GRG Services).  It is an axle seal and at this point doesn't pose any threat to the brakes.  Again do keep in mind that this is not a bus friendly area to need repairs.  Greenville and Florence maybe options but 100 miles inland.  Thanks again for the concern and quick responses.

Can you check the bolts to at leat see if there tight, you may have to take off the simulatr.,  tightening them may hold you til you get further down the road.
