I want to add a 12 volt alternator for my house system to my MCI 8 where the ac compressor used to be. What alt. should I buy and whats the easiest way to mount it? Is there a bracket/mount I can buy to eliminate expensive fabrication?

Here's a 200 amp Leece Neville, with a built in 3 stage regulator. Easy to mount. The price is right too!

try ebay, many ideas, quite a selection,  not sure what would fit your area though.
It's all fun and games til someone gets hurt. ;)

Hi Ron
Check our web site for a alternator mount. May not be the right way but our way.

Paul, nice setup. I would like a single wire alternator and big enough to run everything through my inverter. My batteries are on their last legs but would last me another year by keeping them charged going down the road. That's the only time I really need them or I could start the bus when I need a charge and could boondock a while.

C Ron,
Really nice fabrication of the shown alternator mounting bracket, but would a Vanner 24 - 12 volt equalizer be a better cost solution to the OTR charging of your house batts ?
No belts to tension, etc. I do not know how much the go for on Ebiz but just a thought, may not have been a good thought.

One concern with a high capacity alternator is getting a belt pulley that fits the alternator and takes the same belt as the crank pulley on the Detroit. You need a pretty big belt for a 200 amp alternator.

I have a single wire 12v alt mounted between the two radiator blowers.

I used a 140A Bosch one wire alternator and mounted it where the AC used to be.  The mount took a half hour to make up.  Even if you have to pay someone, it shouldn't be a big deal.  Charging a 12V bank through a Vanner might not work.  The Vanner has a 50A limit, unless they make a bigger one, and the 24V bus alternator puts out 250+A.  If your house bank is dead, the current going through the vanner could easily exceed it's max.  Also, unless you find a used Vanner, installing an alternator will probably be cheaper.

I can get a 94 amp 12 volt alternator from Napa For a total cost of $115.00. Is 94 amps gonna do the trick and let me run everything I want to off of my 5000 watt inverter?

belfert

94 amps at 12 volts is only 1128 watts.  Plenty to charge house batteries, but not enough to run much through an alternator.

For comparision, a 50DN running 24 volt at 270 amps can output over 6,000 watts of power.

Ron,
Depends on what your total load will be.  If you plan to use 5000 watts of power you will need a 12 volt alternator that can produce 416.66 amps (5000 watts divided by 12 volts equals 416.66 amps). This is not allowing anything for ineffencies.  A 160 amp alternator would give you 1920 amps (160 amps X 12 volts equals 1920 amps).   the 50DN producing 12 volts X 270 amps would be 3240 watts.  Hope this helps, Jack
