I have been waiting a week for MCI to order a muffler for my 83 mc-9 6v92ta,,, What I would like to know is there another source that sells mufflers for this ?????

Also they quoted me 6hr labor to install muffler, clamps, tail pipe -----$1100. This seams a bit high to me???

I replaced my MC-8 muffler several years ago (after a blown tag tire split it open). As I recall, it took me about 3-4 hours. This included fabricating new hanger straps and replacing the exhaust pipe from engine to muffler.  It is not a difficult job. I used a lightweight floor jack to hold the muffler in place.  I had access to a used MC-8 muffler, so I cannot comment on muffler prices.  Jack

Maybe an 8 is different than a 9 in terms of mufflers, but mine is held on with two big straps.  I bent a strap when I ran over a tree root and haven't straightened it out yet.  Most of my time will be spent unbending the strap, not removing and replacing.  That does seem a bit high.  How much is the muffler itself?  I seem to remember hearing that they were about $500 or so.  I'd certainly replace the muffler myself even for 3 hours of labor.

They quoted $277. for the muffler...

Hello.

Not a big job, if you are keen to roll around on the ground.

As noted, a car floor jack, big piece of cardboard and some time.

Hard to find after market for those mufflers, MCI has us where they want us...

Be ruthless in evaluating your muffler straps and the clamps. probably best to get fresh hardware.

Don't tighten anything on the muffler until you get the pipes further upstream properly lined up and tight!!!

happy coaching!

An MC9 muffler is easy to install.  You will have to use a "fire-wrench" on the muffler hanger retaining bolts.  The muffler is removed in the hanger.  The hanger retains the rear of the tailpipe.   No alignment issues at all.  There really isn't much to it.  Just keep in mind that the "frame" that the muffler hangs in comes out with the muffler.  Makes it easy to work with.   Don't try to remove just he muffler while the frame is bolted in the bus.  That would be some work... :o
The tail pipe and inlet (some inlets have a bolted strap, which is easy to remove too) is a "V" clamp arrangement that is too easy to R&R.   Just be sure to soak the clamp nuts in PB Blaster.
The SS flex pipe should be in good condition and reuseable.
The only hard part is getting the old bolts out that hold the frame that the muffler hangs in.   Get a good 6 point socket and wrench and break them off.  They are 3/8' bolts and can be broken off.  Fortunately, they are nuts and bolts so once broken, just install new nuts and bolts.  Common sizes.
The price varies by whether the muffler has a cat built into it.  You don't want the cat.   You want just the muffler.  Noise will not be a problem.    The cat is located inside the muffler so a cat style muffler is identical to a non-cat muffler.
I removed the cat from my muffler and now the bus goes 100 MPH!   ;)
Not quite.  Did make a big difference in performance with minimal noise gain.

Have you considered Nimco or Caylor's Supply for a good used muffler?  The cost of shipping may be more than the muffler??
All 6V92TA muffs are the same.   If you get an ex transit muffler, lose the catalytic rock before you install the  muffler.
Not sure what a used muffler would be worth.  Not much.  They last forever if not backed into....stumps??  Eh?

About $250 from Donaldson or Walker for the muffler.  I replaced my muffler with a turbo muffler from Donaldson that has the inlet and outlet on the same end.  It flows more freely, and puts out a bit of nice engine noise now (the original muffler literally made no engine noise out the exhaust pipe).  Go to either Donaldson or Walker muffler site with the dimensions of your present muffler and I'll bet you can find a replacement just fine.  Make sure it is a 5 inch and made for your engine.  Good Luck, TomC
