I have kept the oroinginal bus air, nothing else cools like 9 tons of air conditioning.  and I hate to be hot.

I also used the floor level ducts as wiring runs and some plumbing runs too.  very handy.  In the bedroom, I removed the ducts, and just dump the air out into the room.  The bedroom was the only place I needed the extra floor space anyway, to walk around the bed.  Works well for me.

Redundancy is good.  Last year I spun a bearing on one of my condenser fan motors, I used the inverter and roof airs instead. Not qit a smuch cooling, but still better than nothing.

Well, Ive been running Factory Air since 1997(new), Not a single beat missed and it has NEVER failed to cool from the get go. It blows Cold within 30 seconds. The book sais its a "CO2" Air system, I think it was an Experimental unit. Uses Compressed CO2, Not a Gas that breaks down after a while or completly quits if you Dont use it.  The last 7 years here in 110* + in summer. If I dont turn it down, it will FREEZ me out.. I dont know anyone that has Not had trouble with an AC unit in their vehicle. I think with AC on, I lose 1 mpg or less. BIG DEAL !!!
Why cant a Bus system be as reliable ?

I guess it's time I chime in here..

Yesterday, traveled my 4 hour trip to the Delaware Rally because I choose not to take the Ferry across the Delaware bay. [had to make a stop that way]

The temperature outside was 96 with the heat index at 105, and 95% humidity.. HOT SOUP!!  I had my Yukon on the back, 5 of us onboard, and the OTR air on,

The temp gauge stayed at 190 as long as I stayed at 65mph. We were very comfortable inside, but the front windshield kept fogging up on the outside

when we would stop for a traffic light. I just kept turning on the wipers every couple min's..

Bottom line,, The OTR air is worth every dollar it takes to maintain it!

Speaking as one who has kept the stock HVAC...

The choice all depends on how you want to use your coach, and what you want to mess with in the way of systems, redundancy and all that, just like the rest of the conversion!!!

If you find yourself parking the coach out in the sun shut down, where you can't leave the generator running to keep it cool, nothing beats the stock AC for pulling the temp down when you return and start driving away. Some folks use the coach like this, some don't. If you have no toad, the coach will be far more likely to be used this way, parked at attractions in the big parking lot, and you use it to change venues.

Yes, you will need another way to stay cool in the campgrounds, etc, when the coach motor is shut down. Again, depends on re$ources of ca$h and inclination to maintain redundancy.

If the stock AC is already toast, as it might be in a lot of worn out conversion prospects, the choice to keep it is harder, since all the parts seem to cost multiples of $1000, and if you don't know how to figure some it out yourself, well, there ARE better things to spend time and money on.

What's that we say.... build it your way?

happy coaching!
