That's what I read too. Was not sure if anyone ever has used something like this for the driver or not. If it's cheap it probably won't work anyway. Oh well.

Paul,

These are very common in Hot rods.

This unit is self contained and sealed and really designed for underdash mounting.

I have one similar in a classic pickup and the one thing I dislike is the cold air cannot be directed to the defroster...etc..

But for the drivers comfort, it'll work!

Go to Carrier's web site and compare this evaporator to the ones that they use in shuttle buses.  This looks to be about a 18,000btu unit-which is fine for a pickup or car.  But with our big boxes to cool, a shuttle bus evaporator pushing more like 50,000btu is what you really need-it'll really cool the front half of the bus.  If I were going to all the trouble to run the freon lines 40ft, mount an condenser and compressor, I'd want the biggest unit I could get.  Course, you could run two or three of these smaller units too.
Personally- have 2.5 inches of blown in insulation with three 13,500btu roof tops that work just fine-I use a dash mounted 12v fan to blow in my face which really made a big difference.  Good Luck, TomC

Iv'e got a couple of dash fans also. Just looking at something additional for ME! We have three roof airs and lots of insulation, makes a big differance. I would prefer to not use the genset while driving just to cool down, but I might have to. Always looking for opportunities.
