I am considering a pair of seat belts/shoulder harness for our coach, driver with bostrom air seat and co-pilot Flexsteel seat. What is the best place to attach the shoulder strap anchor to? I read some information on another post, but it was geared toward GMC's.

Thanks in advance,

Happy Trails,

Good question Paul, I've got an air seat too and it's got a lap type seat belt and I've been scratching my head over how to properly install a shoulder/lap belt setup, will be watching this thread for ideas.

They make captain chairs with built-in shoulder harness. They're not cheap but I to can't figure out how else to do it, my copilot seat swivels and hanging the shoulder harness from the wall doesn't make much sense.

I'd also be interested in how to do this on an MCI.  We don't generally swivel the passenger seat while I'm driving, but that could be an issue if one does.  Maybe an old style shoulder-only belt from a car from the early '70's or late '60's would work for that seat.  Hanging the shoulder belt from the wall would / could work on my MC-8.  I'm just not sure where or how to mount this, as the 'bar' between the driver's window and the triangle window is fairly narrow.  I suppose one could fabricate a mount out of square tube and insert a nut from a hole in the back or side of the tube.  This tube can be fairly long - maybe from the floor to the top of the windows and be covered with upholstery to kind of blend in.  If I can figure a way how to do this that wouldn't look too rigged, I'll probably try it.  I'll likely get a lap-shoulder belt from a junked van.  They always seem to be fairly generic and sized to fit a lot of the seats that I see in conversions.  On second thought, I'll probably give it a try, as it won't look any more rigged than the rest of my bus!   ;)

Ahoy, BusNuts,

Driver seats:  I've taken a preliminary look at late model Cadillac front seats.  They incorporate an integral seat belt / shoulder harness, are electric, and (in the Seville) include lumbar support adgustments.  Also, the price is pretty good for (even) perfect seats.

Before I do any more, I'll take a good look at them, and see if they will go OK in my Eagle -01.

BTW, I had an air seat base in my -01, and removed it.  The Eagle ride is very smooth, but with a LOT of suspension travel.  The seat and bus would get out of phase and toss me all over the place.

I know how that feels, I darn near hit my head a couple of times, but oh the fun. ;D

I hope the combination seat/shoulder belt will help hold me in. Just need to make sure it is attached securely.

So far, the travel on my air seat has not been a problem on my Dina that also has torsion suspension like an Eagle.

Belfert, The only time I even noticed a big differance was going over some short bridges over creeks, sometimes they rise to go over then back down quickly. Other than that I like the air ride seat a lot. Just enough firmness without being mushy.
I just thought it would be better to go the shoulder harness route along with lap belts. I will figure out a way to do it, just thought I would see if anyone has done it before that could offer hints. Sounds like that's not the case.
I'll let you all know how it turns out. I need a project to do inside the bus, been raining too much for me to tackle anything outside.

As long as your bus is still registered with DMV under its original year and serial number, you are only required to meet the seat belt law required at the time of manufacture. With an 01 Eagle that was likely lap belt only. If you want to put in a shoulder belt it would not be covered under seat belt laws so you could do pretty much anything you wish. It might not be the best way, (but better than  nothing) would be to anchor the top end of the belt to the top of the seat back frame. Unlike car seats, there is some substantial metal under a bus seat. If you stop so quickly that you tear the seat loose, the seat belts probably will not make much difference.

If you want an idea...

The MCI 102D model coaches have shoulder belts from the factory, find one driving around your neighbourhood and ask the driver if you can have a looksee.

And of note, the coach models that follow, the E and J, do NOT have a shoulder belt.

Who knows what they are up to.....?

happy coaching!
