CJ-4 diesel oil: any need for concern?

There is a new standard for diesel oil, CJ-4.  It is specifically designed for 2007 and later engines.  The oil manufacturers all recommend changing the oil twice as often if you run an LSD diesel which is certainly possible given how slow the ULSD rollout has gone.  The 100 gallons of fuel in my tank is probably LSD.  There is also some concern that pre-2007 engines will wear much faster because certain additives have been reduced.

Should I be running out and buying up all the CI-4 oil I can find for my Series 60?  Reports are that most oil stocks at major retailers are already CJ-4.

No need to worry.  The new oil is low ash to cut down on the loading of the DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter).  You don't need to do ANYTHING different with the ultra low sulfur fuel or the low ash oil.  This applies to 4 strokers.  As usual, those of use with 2 strokers have to keep using straight 40 weight oil like Chevron Delo 100 (not Delo 400).  2 strokers are very receptive to most any kind of fuel.  Good Luck, TomC

As a disclaimer, this entire topic does not apply to 2 stroke diesels that most busnuts have.

The biggest issue with CJ-4 oil and older engines seems to be lower ZDP and supposedly fewer detergents.  Rumors are that engine wear will increase in older engines particularly when used with LSD instead of ULSD.  Use of LSD requires the normal oil change interval be cut in half.

I'm going to try to change the oil with CI-4 this year and by next year LSD should be pretty hard to find.
