After replacing the field and diodes to no avail, I turned my attention to the voltage regulator.

Turns out, finding a replacement for that voltage regulator is very difficult.

Eventually I gave up, and passed the task to Dad.

Low and behold, a few months later, he came up with one, and it solved the problem.

Problem solved.
