I'm adding a fuel pick up and return to the fuel tank for the generator.

Several automotive forums recommend spacing these locations to prevent disruption of the pick up tube.

As many of you know, the area for tapping the tank is small. So spacing is difficult. I assume the generator return wouldn't cause much of an issue.

What are your thoughts?

Not sure how much difference the fuel tanks are between your DL3 and my 96A3.

I had a piece made to replace the Vent, on mine, looking at where you fill the tank is on the upper left. Massive vent that I assume is for high volume fueling, I don't need that much vent.

Put in plate with generator Pickup, Return and much smaller vent, making sure the pickup was several inches higher than the pickup for the bus motor.

Pickup at bottom, return an inch or two down from top.

On my bus the aux fuel pickup doesn't go to the bottom, so it always leaves some fuel in the tank to fire up the main engine and drive to get refueled.

Don't ask me how I spent a half day figuring that out!!!

My Recommendation is to put in a dedicated fuel tank for your generator if possible. On mine the pu goes to within an inch or two from the bottom of a 75gal tank which also feeds my diesel burners. Jus sayin ;)

What is you thinking for a separate tank? I don't forsee a way to do that anyway. But I also would like to know before saying it's impossible.

Here is a pic of  my 24" pick up.

I'm not sure there is an easy way to do this. But I do have a spare port. I suppose I need to make another bung hole for the return or T into the primary one. Either way...it's a tight spot.

That spare bung will work for the pick up, Tee-ing into the original lines won't work (demand of the engine pump will be greater) you might be able to put your return in at the fuel fill or drill the top plate for the return. In any case you'll want your pu/return seperate from the bus engine lines.😉 ps. Do your pu line 4-6" from the bottom, 4" will leave you 30 gallons for the main engine.

Sounds good. It seems easier to do it this way anyhow.

I'm looking at a no weld bung for the return.

Quick follow up:

I removed the cap shown in the photo. I then attempted to place a 24" pick up tube in there. It doesn't want to go.

So I slid a large cable tie in the hole to see if it was open. It is. But I got a little friction.

It's as though it is already a pick up tube that was capped.

Any ideas?

Pull it and modify as needed. 6 or 8 5/16 or 3/8 capscrews. I had mine off a couple years ago.

Yes. I already pulled it off. It was a 22mm

Here is what i was left with. Took a pic with my scope. I was expecting a hole. I can't get my new pick up in there.

Looks like there may already be one.

Most DL have a extra pickup tube for the diesel burner (the Webasto  or other brands )you can tie the generator return line into any return line for the engine or diesel heater.The best about a separate tank  you can buy off road fuel with no taxes or buy highway fuel and keep records and file for tax return, you save about $.45 a gal,I have always used a flow meter on the generator and Aqua/Hot to track the usage lol because I am cheap and don't like taxes

I confirmed this was in fact a pick up. I had a fitting I was able to attach to the tank and a rubber tube to blow air through it. I could hear the bubbling in the tank.

My powerful lungs nearly split the tank.

Anyway, what I don't know is how deep the tube is. I have about 1/8 of a tank currently.
