Dan Gibson Ranch is in the Rio Linda area away from Don and it flood any time there is a major storm. I texted Don the other night and he says he has had enough rain and wind but he might be up at his Bus property near OR line and it is by the Klamath river and it would be worse up there. But Sacramento has levees to protect it but inner areas have smaller ones and some times they get blown out and the Army core is on top of it there. A town east of Sac called Wilton always gets it but this storm has killed four people there in the last week and a levies break in one area really flooded a lot of homes there and some could not get out.

Go to KCRA news and that will give you the details

Cyclones?!
These things are almost west coast hurricanes & really hugh to say the least!
A few months ago one of these hit the Aleutian and wiped out some villages. Seems this year the Farmers Almanac got it really right or in the case of the receiving inhabitants - really wrong.

That story us about Captiola, Calif. It is off hyway 1  about midstate on the ocean near 101. It did get hit last week with some flooding and it wiped out its  long working pier.

The LA area always get some major floods and up north they have lost power for 330K homes and businesses last week because of the heavy windys they normally do not get.

Hi Dan, Dave and the other nuts.
This is turning into a real winter for CA. Power out again today after last night, scary. It never goes over 40 or so in Sac but i watched local meters pegging 60. Way off the scale for not in hurricane lanes.
Took the dog around the block and oh boy - lots of big trees down, just in my block. It took SMUD nearly a day and a half to get us back online. This one is bigger, there was like 300,000 out of service. I figuring a couple days but the off grid bus sure is a nice place to hideout.

Rivers cresting over flood stage the next couple days. Will have to go sight see it.

Caplitola is along the coast and gets heavy weather but it took out the pier this time so worse than ever? long time anyway.
Still nothing like what some folks experience with the hurricanes going full tilt.

Have you ever been to an actual communist country?   Just wondering...

John

I lived in a post communist country for 8 years.  The handwriting is on the wall.

Because it is still the best state overall to live in.

Don which other states have you lived in?
I never LIVED in CA, but for 17 yrs I was in CA almost every week.
I like many things about CA, but ain't noway I'd move there.
I've lived in Panama, VA (don't remember either of those as I celebrated my 3rd birthday after those), IN (most of my young life from 3-23), KY, FL, ND, MN, OK, AR, and GOD's country where a call to heaven is a local call! (TN)
If I was to ever leave TN it'd be to go up to the Pacific NW of OR, ID or WA!
I drove truck all over this beautiful country and it all has great things at different times of the year, but for me TN is god's country and why my Gramma always lived here except a couple yrs that she lived in KY in one of mom & dad's houses, but she returned to TN to HOME as she referred to it!

CA is a nice place to visit, but for those of us that have lived other places where there are not near as many regulations/laws about how and what you can do on your own property there ain't no way we'd ever live there!

I've spent most of my life here but have lived in other states and countries too. The natural beauty and diversity is unparalleled. On specifics you can say other places in the world have better alpine mountains like the Himalyas or greater architecture like Europe or Japan or better beaches like the Maldives but why I stand firj on CA being best overall is the opportunities are everywhere, the best universities in the world are here, Sandhill Road is the greatest thing to streets paved with gold in reality there is, etc.

It is a pain in the @$# but nothing for free. There are lots of wonderful places elsewhere to be. It really is a personal decision on what each person values the most. Even saying that though, there are very remote places in CA that are as sparse as many others if that is your choice.

Hell, even Dan don't need to go to AK for snow and cold. Just go up to the high Sierras and stay in a mountain cabin at 9,500. Anyone would get enough rough weather to suit them.

Now - I admit this bomb cycloine is getting old. Elec out for second time and multiple days. Glad to have the bus to be civilized. lolAnd yes - solar don't work for crap when there is no sun for days on end.

People think of CA like it is all the LA area as seen in the movies and on TV,the state has some beautiful scenery. I used to love the bay area, but the last time we took our grandkids to San Fransico to the beautiful park people naked playing checkers and the homeless begging for money was a little much for me we haven't been back lol Needles is about it for me
