About all Bakerfield is known for is Country music.Merle Haggard,Buck Owens ,Dwight Yoakum and the Bakerfield sound plus a lot of farming with orchards and plenty of oil and gas fields and it can get HOT and dry with 5 inches of rain annually

We backpacked 118 miles of the John Muir trail on the Sierra Crest. It took two weeks. Went in at Bishop and came out at Lone Pine after ascending Mt Whitney. The Owens Valley just on the East side of the Sierra is an awesome place. Geography doesn't get anymore extreme in the lower 48 as it does in California. Mt. Whitney & Death Valley are only 67 miles apart with the Owen's Valley in between. Mt. Whitney the highest ASL Death Valley the lowest BSL there was some geological happenings there!

Have you ever been to an actual communist country?   Just wondering...

John
Folks in the USA generally have a narrower world view than those living in other countries. Not studied, lived or travelled abroad does not give one that in-your-face punch of reality of how others live in other countries.

Other than political and media bias at work, there is no place offering more freedoms of speech, movement, rule of law, and up yours to just about anything or anybody without fear of much of anything of consequence happening to you.
The "ugly American" label comes from citizens from here going to other countries oblivious that you need to fully understand "when in Rome, do as the Romans do" and that is different than what goes in the US

Up until a year ago, Both my wife and I were born and raised in the LA area. We had a wonderful mini avocado (1.1 acres with 85 avocado trees and fruit trees) in Camarillo. Had parking for both my 40ft transit and 40ft truck. But water was $350/month (avocados are thirsty), everything else was expensive. We just couldn't take the Liberals anymore and we moved to Nampa, Idaho. We have 1.1 acres (no fruit trees) and a 48ft x 32ft x 16ft tall RV garage heated so I can work on the truck in the winter-and I can tilt my cab up inside too! We simply love it here-it costs half or less than California, the people are all friendly and polite. I just had to learn to drive slower with more patience. Idaho reminds us what California was like in the 60's and 70's. Good Luck, TomC

Idaho was laid back in early 80' a small airport you could drive up and get out and catch a plane 10 minutes before lifting off only 2 airlines served Boise United and Delta. When I came home on Friday I always had the same Untied Pilot that lived in Boise and on approach he would say ladies and gentlemen welcome to Boise set your clock back 20 years . When we lived in Boise, they never had a shopping mall till 1985 Nampa had a mall, but Boise shopping was downtown , I love Idaho Boise has some of the best parks in the nation built by people like Joe Albertson and Morrison of MK Construction in Boise

I don't mind being "Back East". Everything is so much greener and alive and the humidity is good for my nose and my skin. Wouldn't mind following the seasons but you sort of get used to it. As the saying goes, wherever you are that's where you're at.

Jim
I saw it on the Internet. It MUST be true...
