With images of cars and trucks  stranded on snow clogged interstates, better think twice before taking that Tesla or other electric only vehicles. Atleast they can get emergency gas or diesel to those stranded. I guess you could haul a predator in trunk or a small trailer.

In the case of Tesla just hangout at a supercharger with climate control on and play games on the display. Heck a simple wall outlet somewhere will do...

Can an EV be charged from a standard 15-20A wall outlet?

Getting to a wall plug or supercharger can be problem when they close the hiway and you are in the middle of the storm, I see some AAA tow trucks have a charging capability in Northern Az still if they close I 40 and I 17 you are out of luck.A closer on I 40 from Kingman to Ashfork can last for days not hours AZ is not good at opening a hiway after a storm BTDT for 2 days at Seligman

Like all those charging stations aren't  already in use and reserved for two days. Not much help when you are sitting in a 10 mile long wreck site with no exit for 12 miles and even berms are blocked with stuck cars.

I think EV owners are smarter than that John venturing out into a strom, most owners I know have a gas rig for backup anyways,Then you will have Loonies out of gas and no way for the rescue to reach them except by helicopter, I have seen that before on I 40.In AZ if there are fatalities in a accident they close both sides of the interstate till the MD examiner arrives and moves the body or bodies sometimes it is a 6 hr drive for those guys,I never have seen one fly in they always drive up in a Van

Do we really need a thread slandering EVs every other week on here?  We're a bus forum, not those douches who go around ICEing out charging stations (hopefully).

If anyone on here has an electric bus, I'm certain they know how to handle winter weather appropriately.  If you don't like EVs, no one is forcing you to buy one and the owners of said EVs probably don't need or want your input.

I agree let's stop slandering EV's on general principle...

I haven't heard about EV charging stations being reserved for two days before. Again it depends on which EV you buy. Ok slightly opinionated here being an early Tesla adopter(2014) and still loving my eight year old Tesla which I will only replace if it is totaled...

For non-Tesla vehicles I have heard of arriving at a third party charging stations and half the stalls being inoperative or running at a reduced charging power level. Which I think is either equipment problems or them not wanting to pay for peak demand power rates from the power companies since they are trying to bootstrap themselves into a new business.

So let me get back on my hobby horse with Tesla. I have noticed Tesla super charging stations experiencing a steady growth in the number of stalls.

When I first got my car it was like flight planning an airplane in bad weather. Doable but you might go a bit out of your way to accomplish the mission. The typical number of charging stalls was between four to eight.

Recently I pulled into a Tesla charging location with 50+ stalls that was between San Francisco and Los Angles.

Anyway the cabin environment system does shorten your range but since it is a heat pump your not going to freeze except in the extreme cases. It's winter weather don't you throw in a snowmobile suit or space blankets just in case?

Petro vehicles throw 80% of the purchased energy out the tail pipe so yes it can better heat the cabin with the waste heat.

Your position is don't buy an EV because in 1% of extreme situations you might be better off with a petro vehicle? If that's the case just think of it "As evolution in action" if you didn't plan ahead in bad weather...

Ok off the soap box and running for the dam border...

PS. Yes you can charge a EV from a wall outlet but it painfully slow (like three days if fully empty) but you can stay warm in the meantime. That's level one charging, level two is 240 volts, think dryer or oven at home. Level three is charging station direct high voltage DC power to the vehicles battery pack.

PPS. A Tesla now automatically does the flight/trip planning for you
based on weather and route that you tell it and it will charge more frequently for emergency energy reserves in bad weather. Not something the car came with but a result of steady over the air software updates that Tesla pushes out to keep your car the best EV on the road..

Musk is enjoying this since he likes to hear both sides :^, I visited startup converter of Fords EV vans they are going to be nice at hefty price tag,I know people will buy the unit but a range of 75 to 100 miles would suck in a camper I think for $250k but charging is free @ a Ford charging station EV's are the future till something better comes along though,With Musk you never know he may link Telsa to StarLink and can charge from anywhere at anytime

Not against EV's. Just saw a news clip showing 3 interstates closed due to storm with at least a mile of going nowhere. Wondered how they cope in this situation. Yes, you might think a Tesla owner is smarter than average. But smart people attempt dumb things every day. I'm sure you've  been on a highway in your life that  you really should have stayed home.

I'm thinking a hybrid is pretty cool. Gets great fuel mileage when running on gas and charging itself for another free run on electric

Let's get off the subject. Electric vehicles have nothing to do with our love of busses. By the way we just bought a Jeep Rubicon hybrid. Has a whole 22-mile range on battery, but it has a 2.0 Turbo engine, runs on gas, and we love it. The kicker was it had a $8000 up front rebate.

This board would get boring as hell if it was all about buses and the owner knows it .Like EV's or not the charging stations at small business increases their sales by a bunch I see that in Needles at the DQ and the Telsa charging station at the truck stop with 15 new stations paid for by Telsa even the parking lot was paid for by Telsa.Man do I miss Don Smith RIP (Boxcarokie) he would make this conversion very interesting indeed and make you believe Telsa was a bus  :^

Alright, let's talk battery drills and impact wrenches. And does anyone use a battery push mower?
