here's  an idea for your shop. If you don't  have code issues.
these are 8' 6" high. 8ft wide use one forty and one 20 per side then one 20 and one 40 for 2nd row. Flat bottom truss roof. Gives 17 foot clearance. 2 -40's across back. Gives you 40x52x17 size. with 8 foot width walls of dead air space to boot.

That's nice but you still have about 20K in the containers plus the crane rental plus the roof. Add the concrete floor, wiring and plumbing and you're pushing 60K. It's pretty cheap shop space even at that, plus you can use the containers for storage as well as office space, enclosed areas for clean work, facilities and such. I imagine a lot of building codes would prevent it.

The price of containers now it would be less money  to go with a prefab metal building , I bought a 1 time use container 6 months ago that cost $8000 + tax and delivery was the best deal I could find containers are not cheap now with Joe's inflation rate of 9% L0l

Your location is sure gonna effect costs too. Great for the very dry location out west.We are near east coast, and they are drowning in containers. There are always ads here for containers for sale. You would need a trucker buddy to help on shipping costs. plus  crane time. It would help if the containers could be winched on and off trailers. That way, only crane time to set all into place at one time. Interesting possibilities. More containers are going back to source than before also. Neighbor that has some logging buddies, says they are hauling whole trees back in them for the wood plus other items, like lumber, scrap, etc.

Our containers come from the LA Ca ports  300 miles from me,they have nice trailers to unload the containers with tilt beds and winches they use a 1 ton truck to pull.I want one of the refer type with spray foam and Stainless inside the $15,000.00 price tag changed my desire on those .The pesticide the Chinese use to treat the floors I wouldn't be using the lumber for sure the stuff has been banned here since the 70's or 80's (Chlordane)

Prices on sea cans will drop fast over the next couple years as there are so many empty ones piling up over here. No container ship will take empties back and it will take a decade for trade to catch up with the back hauls.

last time I was in New Jersey, about 15 years ago, there were thousands piled up down by offloading area.Another item showing up everywhere last few years is those 300 gallon plastic liquid containers with the metal cage around them. local surplus store was selling for 75 bucks each. I would have bought one, but couldn't figure what I would use it for.

We can purchase sea worthy containers @ 40' for 3 grand in FL but the $16,000 to transport to AK is prohibitive!

John 10-4 on containers in Homer. We're not thinking of building with it (them - containers) but to ship stuff on hand in FL to AK. I mentioned the $16,000 to ship being prohibitive but comparing it against the cost of the goods in the container to buy in AK would be a whole lot more... Geeze biting on that decision.

They load 1000's of empty containers going back to China at Long Beach everyday,the ones that don't pass inspection stays here and sold,the one time use was only 500 bucks extra for a new container not now ,I can buy the older containers 40 ft with weld patches for around 4 k,seems dumb to me railroads hauling empty containers back to the port if they are not going back to China,All the BNSF trains are all offline and parked at Kingman because of a train wreck there are miles of containers backed up waiting to make it too the docks

yeah,you can scrounge up containers at most ports FOB for not alot but the cost to ship home can be mucho $$$ depending how far it has to go. Ideally, you find a full load heading from the coast to a destination and get it there especially if it is an empty load back.That said, I know zero ablut the freight and shipping business. But being on the west coast they still want a lot for those things.
