Hi BCM - One Lapper had a series of posts waaaaay back in 2006 where he was working on a muffler re-skinning project for his 4106.  That post inspired me to re-skin my own muffler in 2022 for the exact same reasons that One Lapper was doing it 16 years ago = $$$$$.   New muffler for my 8V92 (Prevost Le Mirage) is $800 plus shipping.  The re-skin job was $130.  The biggest cost of the $130 was an adapter flange from truckpipesusa.com.  They have a special section on their website that allows a person order parts so that the DIY types like me can build their own muffler from scratch at home.  THANKS BCM AND THANKS One Lapper!!!

I probably shouldn't say this since you are already finished that task (nice job!!!).

I am looking to ditch my muffler and put in a resonator for less back pressure and more power.

According to Detroit diesel master mechanic that did my tune-up; since you have a turbo a muffler is not really needed.

I think the Nelson? muffler catalog lists various DDA and other brand engines in turbo and non turbo and factory recommended back pressure and muffler recommendations to work with that. Might be similar with other companies.

Hi Chessie 4905 - As you said:  Nelson Global Exhaust products has a section in their aftermarket catalog that details muffer specs for both gas and diesel engines.  A much more in depth article is in the Donaldson muffler catalog (www.donaldson.com).  The Donaldson on-line catalog has a multi page section with charts/diagrams/photos featuring every possible element of muffler construction, muffler regulation, muffler history through the years and even has the math formulas needed to DIY compute muffler back pressure,  muffler flow rates and muffler decible levels. Good stuff.   -Dean

My big Donaldson oval 5" in and out on the same side was $150. Just keep that in mind when it finally gives up the ghost. Good Luck, TomC

That Donaldson link is useless. Goes to their global home page and no way to get to that catalog that I could find.

I saw it on the Internet. It MUST be true...
