Exhaust pipe broken

8v92t, I pulled over for the night, and in the morning my exhaust pipe is broken through completely between the engine and turbo.   Is this more serious than just no turbo, or can I still drive it?  What pressure is usually in there?

Is it on a straight section where you can install a band clamp for temp fix? If the flange on end of pipe where it attaches to the turbo has broken off, you can buy a stub flange and have it welded to pipe if in decent condition, or use a band clamp temporally. You don't  want to run it as is since exhaust temp off turbo is hot enough to cause a fire and permanently black stain everything in engine compartment.

It's right at the flange.  I'm at a rest area in the middle of Wyoming, I'm thinking of trying to tape or clamp something over it.

Is that cast iron on bottom? If not, you could remove v clamp and cut off flange from that pipe. Install band clamp. If cast iron, remove v clamp, remove broken flange, find a replacement stub, measure and cut enough off old pipe to fit. Reinstall v clamp and secure the two pieces with band clamp. For emergency repair, buy a muffler repair kit, wrap the bad joint according to instructions.

PC Industries in Afton Wy (1-877-885-4724) should have the pipe if you are close that the standard pipe for a top mounted turbo.Those are not your standard flanges you find in auto parts the bevel is different on Detroit's and when you find one they are about 50 bucks ea,the replacement will slide over the pipe then welded

Thanks, Afton is too far.  I have clamps with me but it may take a while to dig them out.  I also have some aluminum sheets, that should fit the bill.

I needed the flexibility of the thin aluminum cans to seal over the lump of the flange.  They started to tear, so I put a second layer under each clamp.

No visible exhaust leaks on startup so we will be on our way and check on that repair later.

He could still drive the bus he wasn't down,traffic behind him would be little up set with the black smoke though

The aluminum got blown out pretty quickly...

Air hose just above is melting.  Will try again with a slightly different method.

No black smoke behind though.
