After a couple weeks on the generator compartment & totally insulating the compartment, sound deadening ducting on the cooling air discharge, and adding a Cummins resonator after the muffler on the exhaust - a low level conversation can be easily had right next to the compartment. Got delivery of the Gen-Turi exhaust system. Tail pipes on both the generator & diesel air heater were rerouted to eliminate under vehicle build up.
Need a road test yesterday!
The genny compartment expanded metal door was closed off & insulated and cooling air is now drawn in from the next compartment back that also has expanded metal. Quite the difference... :^

And there was much rejoicing...!

Everyone should make their generator quieter than it is.

Thank you for sharing!

Nice Dan what a difference. We got the Gen-turi also years ago at Quartszite. I just pop it together and hook the strap and it works great.

It is quiet, but I came across a GMC 40ft buffalo that the only way you knew the generator was running was feeling hot exhaust coming from the exhaust pipe. Was truly eye opening and quite amazing. Good Luck, TomC

Dan got me started on this.  I showed him the free dB upload and he showed me how to do a screen shot.  Jack

Dan, thanks to you I now know how to take and post a screen shot.

My genny is 2000 watts at idle and 3000 watts at full load--so lots smaller than yours. Here are the readings (at 18') I took this morning. The titles refer to the readings below them. Jack

I'm using Decibel X free from the Google App store. It's pretty cool & more sophisticated than I'd ever use it all for.
Jack suggested the free apps as we were comparing notes with our gennys. We'd (& everyone else around us) has been hearing our loud noise maker for over 40 years. After insulating it's compartment methodically it still was fairly loud until a added acoustically deadening duct to the cooling air discharge & a resonator after the muffler - wala quieter than conversation at last!  :^
