Installing A Clock Spring

Any body here ever install a clock spring in the Smart Wheel ? they say mine is bad is why the cruise,wipers,lights,fast idle and so on is not working,I have a new one with no instructions and VIP the manufacture will not furnish you crap they just say take it to a dealer

You mean a clock spring right? It's in there to let you wind up the wheel and still have wires connected right? Some have one spring and some have several. Hard to say without seeing it.

Yep got it backward,mine looks like a turn signal assembly looks like plug and play lol I will find out soon when I pull the steering wheel ,I found out it is made by Douglas Auto Tech for VIP it is a DAC 1900043 used in Freightliner and other class 8 trucks,Douglas has the instructions on their site I found

Google vip smart wheel problem or vip steering wheel clock spring replacement. There is info there that may cover yours. Couldn't copy and paste on this tablet.

I found it John on the Douglas site lol like always when I pulled the cover a ground wire was broken .since I have a new unit I am pulling the wheel and install the new one

If you repair the wire ant that fixes it, you can keep your new part as a spare. It'll never need replacing then.😂

Wonder where they get the name clock spring ? been trying to figure that one out lol it is a pricy piece of plastic with 2 wires and 2 plugs

The clock spring is a flat spiral spring that was wound up tight like the retract spring in a tape measure. You can see how that could be used to carry signals from the steering wheel.

the old brass discs worked pretty well, but not for electronics, I suppose
