train ride

We stopped in Canon AZ. and rode the Royal Gorge train today. Sprung for the observation car. Wow, what a ride. Car rode like a Cadillac, nice wide padded seats and tables. Drinks and food could be ordered. The views through that gorge are spectacular! And sitting in the dome, you had great views you couldn't  see in regular coaches. Most enjoyable train ride I've  ever taken. Well worth the money. If you are ever in the area, don't  miss this. Nice campground we stayed at in the area. No campers allowed under 45. No guests under 25. Clean, peaceful, all hookups. Pretty new. Royal View campground. Mostly pull through. 11 miles from Canon. Top of area. Light to moderate breeze all the time. Did this ride on the way to Gillette, Wy. for FMCA convention.

Their website looks very interesting and informative. We all love buses but with rails there are no bumps and you barley if at all hear the engine. Hence smooth and quiet.

I knew I would have to worry about campgrounds not letting the bus in for its age but now I'm not old enough to camp at them? I guess I'll go back to the kids table...

Interesting we are going to Durango Colorado for the Durango train ride then then up to Colorado Springs to see family looks like we might have to double back for that train ride before we head on up for the rest of our trip starting the 4th

was evedy bit as nice as Durango, which we did a couple of days before. Amazing how a railroad fit through that gorge. They say the walls are 1000 feet in a couple of places.

I am amazed at the old redwood pipe that was still in use when we did the trip,another time we were there some fools from England were bungee jumping off the bridge

Had to kill a weekend between assignments in Frisco and Aspen a few years ago. 

At that time, for reasonable fare, you could ride the locomotive.  Capacity limited to two people, and remained on the north end loco (an F-7) when they changed ends for the return to Canon City if I recall correctly.  Well worth the money.

they had a gp45 on one end. The wooden and some steel pipe failed some years ago. City decided to get there water elsewhere. Maybe wells. Speaker on train didn't mention the source of new supply. Cool to see old pipe line running on opposite side of gorge from rails. They even bored several 3 or 4 foot holes through the rock in places. Some of the wood pipe still looks intact other places it is falling apart. I liked the mini truss bridge carrying the pipe crossing a rather large opening. And the hanging bridge the train crossed.

My wife and I did the the train two years ago.  It was nice and we really liked the food.  I would do it again sometime.  We saw lots of rafting paddles stranded in the river.  It's fun to see the rafters go through the narrows.  Very wild.  I did the rafting too.  The pic shows me with the lilly white farmer's tan.
