4106 baggage door hinge w/fabric

I read somewhere there is some baggage door hinge for 4106 GM doors that has fabric in it and the hinge material lasts a long time. TIA

That material is not worth the time and effort to install , call IBP @407-880-9700 speak with Steve he has the good stuff

That was called "Bison Hinge," developed/marketed by a fellow from OR, IIRC. Haven't seen it advertised in any of the bus mags for years.

Luke at US Coach in NJ also carries good hinges, 1-888-262-2434 should be in your speed dial for GM parts!

One of the biggest reason 4106 bay door hinges fail is due to the door itself being bent along the hinge track. For longest life, that hinge track has to be perfectly straight.  You may have to "adjust" yours this time round.

Before installing new hinges, clean the tracks thoroughly with a .22 cal long rifle barrel cleaning brush, then wash/rinse/dry thoroughly.

When actually installing new hinges, install the body side first, then, while holding the door horizontal (w/ help from a friend!), slide the door onto the hinge.  The shop manual suggests using talcum powder (and Clifford concurs) as a lubricant, but lots of folk use liquid dish soap, some folk like the slippery goop electricians use to pull wire thru conduit, and the kinky bunch often uses KY Jelly! Choose your poison?

Oh, and don't forget the tiny screws that hold the hinge in place!!

Unless Luke has a new supplier the hinge he was selling had the fibers and didn't last long

RJ, that was Stuart Bonney that made the Bison Tuff hinges. He died years ago and i think that his son sold off the last of the hinges.

When you install the hinge be sure to use vise grips on each end and pull the slack out if it has a wrinkle it was tear on the ends.IBP has good stuff but is not cheap compared to others .watch what lube you use to install with too or you will be doing it again in a couple of years

No petroleum based lubricants as it dissolves the rubber overtime.  Talc works great but getting harder to find as it's disappearing from the market - it is a carcinogen. The new generation powders are going corn starch or other product that flow more like sand than dust so if your not sure if it is talc the next best lubricant will be electrician's wire pull lubricant like RJ said. We keep the clear stuff on hand as it also works great with locking strip weather stripping.

Seriously The scare of Talc screwed up my (our) Gold Bond foot powder.

Yes, Luke has a new supplier, and mentioned on FB just recently that he's had no issues with the new stuff.

I'm still using compartment hinge material  ordered direct from GM from back in the 80s! The stuff that's been on the bus since then and enough to redo the whole bus again in original boxes where one box equals a large door. Periodically I inspect the new old stock still in boxes & see virtually no signs of degrading. It's been stored in air conditioning all those years...

It was nothing to see hinge material 40 years old on buses without a sign of cracking ,I have some hinge material for a Eagle the date on the packaging says 1979 I bought from Jerry Jefferson in 2000 still looks new

Yeah, but all the old stuff probably used chemicals banned today. Many of the old great products have been neutered due to EPA and every other government agency.
