I finally found my emergency blinkers switch!!!

Any suggestions on how to fix this without taking off the steering wheel and replacing the switch?

Thanks

They used to make a knob type switch for flashers. Maybe you could bypass and add to dash area. I would see if Luke has a replacement and if so, just pull the wheel. Just put a scribe mark on wheel/shaft so as not to mess up indexing.

The wires have to come out of the column down below somewhere.

The trick is picking the right ones...

If you have a schematic, i would work back to the terminal block, if there is one, and attach my "new" solution from there for a neat install, and leave the bottom of the column alone?

Happy coaching!

GM just used a toggle switch - I believe it is a DPDT. Not sure how yours is wired, but possibly you can go with something simple. Best way is to pull the steering wheel and get the proper switch if possible, or to check the wiring to the current one so you can wire a replacement on the dash.

Hi Guys

Thanks for the suggestions and the external switch route occurred to me about an hour after I posted.

I found the wiring diagram and trying to puzzle out where to put an external switch, as it doesn't seem to show the activation switch for the emergency flasher.

Looks like you'll need a triple-throw on/off switch. Something like this: https://www.zoro.com/carling-technologies-toggle-switch-3pst-10a-250v-screw-hk254-73/i/G2924153/

The hot coming from the flasher feeds both the turn signals and the 4-way flashers on the black lead. In the 4-way switch they've jumpered all three terminals on the input side of the switch and fed with the black wire.

On the output side of the switch, they fed one terminal to the red wire going to the turn signal switch (not the red wire taped off.) The second terminal connects to the white wire which goes to the turn signal switch, and the third goes to the green wire which is also going to the turn signal switch.

Looks to me that there are some jumpers built into the turn signal switch, and they've got it wired so that no matter where the turn signal lever is the 4-ways will work if turned on.

Should be a simple replacement, once you've got access to the wires. However, it looks like some of the wires coming off the 4-way switch go directly to the turn signal switch. To me, that would seem to mean that you won't be able to access them from down lower where the wires leave the steering column and go into the dash. If you see a green wire down below that might mean they connect down below. If not, then I'd suspect they go directly to the turn signal switch.
