On the 1989 MCI 96A3, on the front axle, I am changing out the axle seals.

The bearings are in good shape, not too much oil had leaked out and shoes look in good shape.

My Question, what is the tool that is used to tighten/loosen/torque the Axle retainer nut/giant threaded washer?

I was able to loosen and remove it using a blunt end screw driver and tapping in the holes.

I would like to be a little more precise reinstalling.

You could likely get a different style in a kit replacement.
I think this list that nut A1227A391 in the photo of yours. With a BWP no. M1968 but you might recheck the specs in the document.
Further leads to some meritor kits of a hex style. If on their parts express site.
But the spanner is buildable, always cost there too.

The nut sits down inside the walls of the hub a good bit and the lugs are in the way as well, I will either have to create an offset spanner or bend one to accommodate the offset, so I was wondering what everyone else did, I will probably build my own tool and then I will have it for future use.

It takes a 2 prong spanner socket 4 prongs sockets are easier to find and you can grind off 2 prongs and they work

Will the inside clear the spindle? Looks like may have to do some grinding on the tool for clearance.

It's been 25 years since doing the brakes on a model 10 Eagle ..
Isn't there a missing thick washer that has a bunch of holes to index
The pin on that first nut , it locks on the machined flat on the spindle
A second nut with a hex tightens the whole Assy w a socket .
That first nut shown is no more than finger tight taking up the initial preload.

To follow up, my friend Ted, who has a 1989 MCI 102A3 was looking through the stuff that came with his bus and found this tool, just exactly what I needed.

One end is the spanner socket, the other end is the right size for the locknut and you put a bar through the middle for leverage.

Looks homemade, nice piece.
