Been finding a fair amount of oil in the coolant. At first I thought it was residue from the disintegrated blower slowly finding it's way to the surge tank as oil floats on water. When I drain coolant from bottom of radiator it looks to be pure water/antifreeze mix but in the surge tank - lots of oil. Before leaving Alaska I used oil only absorbent media & got lots of oil out of the surge tank, now I'm doing it again & still lots of oil only in the surge tank. We consumed two gals of oil in over 10,000 miles while coolant has been maintaining level. I'm thinking oil cooler may be leaking? We're going after pulling radiator, fan hub, front main seal & oil change so we're in the area anyway. Would sure like to find out why oil in coolant... Any ideas?

Ditto with Clifford.  Oil coolers are a pain to test.  They have to be completely flushed out once removed with a hot pressure washer then pressure tested.  If it's not the oil cooler it could be a crack in the engine somewhere.

There could also be coolant in the oil.  My son lost a engine because of that.

So sorry to hear Dan,
You have one of the cleanest 04's I've ever seen.
Thanks again for all your help in Blythesville. Turned out the over heating I was experiencing came from a slipping fan belt.

Jack no coolant in the oil. Mike glad it was only a loose belt although your other upgrades would help also. Sometimes we forget to check the simplest things first! The old girl of ours doesn't owe us a thing. Almost 11,000 miles later and she's burping for some maintenance - we owe it to her. Great seeing you in Blytheville. It was a blast...

send a sample of your oil to a lab to see what is in there . I did a oil and a anti freeze sample this spring to get a base line  and it was only $ 58 for both . came back with a great report now less stress

Cleaned & tank tested the oil cooler as per da book. Applied 125 psi @ 180° F tank water temp. No leaks, it's going back in.

A leaking gasket on the cooler will cause the problem also

luvrbus I too was thinking it might have been a leaking gasket but when I look at the cooler exploded view I am trying to understand how oil can move toward water even with both oil & water side of the core plate gaskets leaking - it would appear to me that any gasket leakage on the oil side or the water side of the core plate wouldn't mix oil & water. I'm sorry if I sound like a non-believer but I need to understand how? What am I missing here? Thanks - maybe at a plate (8.4370) bolt hole(s)?

Should I use some gasket compound with the new gasket install?

10-4 on the #5 Aviation Permatex. Yes we did check liner height during the in-frame. Don't remember the numbers but do remember checking it & reading da book.  Thanks!
