Went camping for 3 days on the weekend and my bedroom ac died  :'(

We have 3 roof ac units ,the front and middle are the original 20 year old units and are quieter then the newish bed room unit that was replaced in 2014 by P O . Dometic penquin 2 low profile . How times have changed as the newest unit has failed not the old ones .

So what is a good replacement unit in a 13500 kw air only . I was thinking on installing a old fashion heat strip like the front 2 ac have as it will always work regardless of outside temperature

any ideas ? my head hurts from looking

thanks   dave

You can shove Dometic ac units. I wouldn't  use one on a wheelbarrow. I only like Norcold. If you want extra durability, they sell a more robust version for more money.
But, then they are like tires. Some think they are God's  chosen ac unit. I respectfully disagree.

Stay away from the Air Commands if you live south of the Maxon Dixon line. I have two and they stop working at 107 degrees so if you spend much time driving in the south in the summer, they will not work.  I went with a Dometic and it works fine in the hot climate.

We swore by Fridgiking in an earlier day but are no longer in business. We replaced it with a Dometic HE Brisk Air many years ago - still going strong... We like the 12000 btu HE because it uses only 9 amps to run. Norcold makes the worst chest type fridge/freezers hands down. After our third one in less than 1/2 dozen years we gave up on them...

Strange-I have an Norcold chest freezer that's been running since 1993, but then again it is old style R12 freon. Good Luck, TomC

I hear you Tom, our "vintage" Norcold sold by Sears Roebuck lasted 13 years. The new style was the crap I was referring to...

I have three original Penguins from 1996 that are still doing fine, and three Carriers from the nineties that are also doing fine. Neither one of these are available now, but I would consider a used one if you could find it over many of the new products out there.

I just bought 2 brisk 2 by Dometic. I don't think they will last out the year. They are noisy, did I say noisy. They both sound like the compressor is hitting something and I fully expect a hole rubbed in something important. I can hear either of them from 500 ft away and think they are to loud for campgrounds. Stay away from Dometic.   olebusman

The Penguin ll is not quite by no means even on low.The ll cools good on the low speed on high it doesn't cool good almost like it moves to much air over the coils to keep up.LOL they were sold as 3 speed like the old Penguins when I question the sales guy at Camping World he replied it is a 3  speed off,low and high I just walked away the guy was serious

Correct me if I am wrong but I assume the compressor runs only one speed and the fan speed is the only thing that actually changes on all units...correct?  So the Amperage draw will be very close to the same on all settings.

Nick would know better, compressor cycles on and off in mild weather, then runs continuously in hot weather, when they get warm in hot weather is reaching the limit of capacity to exchange heat.

Coleman used to have a tsr, two speed rotary compressor on some of theirs. I don't  think they are made anymore. Their heavy duty versions are supposed to have thicker tubing in their evaporators and condensers. They are slightly heavier and more expensive.

Three speeds- high, low, and off. Lol
