Power steering fluid - senior moment?

This question might sound dumb, but I'm going to ask it anyways...

I'm cleaning the bay where I store all my spare fluids and found a gallon jug of Dexron in there. For the life of me, I cannot remember why I'm carrying it. My power steering and 4-speed transmission both take engine oil.

Only thing I can think of is it came over with the stuff from my 4106 and I didn't realize it was unneeded.

Am I missing something? Am I having a senior moment? Does anything on my bus (GM 4108) take Dexron?

When my power steering cylinder was rebuilt, the TRUCK mechanics installed PS fluid in the whole system.  I had
BIG BAD LEAK at one of the fittings at said cylinder during my first big trip afterwards, and it all leaked out, so mine now has the proper 30 wt oil also.  I had to fill it up every time I went to pull into a campsite.  Talk about ARMSTRONG!

This is one possible explanation, that there was PS fluid in it at one time, and the jug of oil came with the bus.

I have also heard of "old timers" putting it in the diesel to treat it (but I don't remember what for--clean injectors?).

Tell me about it. Try driving through city traffic to get the bus to the shop like I did in Davenport last week. And then I had to back into a parking spot in their lot. Biggest problem was that I could only get about half the normal turning radius without the power steering to help - just didn't have the umph to do it any further at slow speeds.

I'm going to leave the PS fluid home after I put everything back in the bay. It will allow me to carry an extra gallon of oil. Unless I figure out why the PS fluid was there to begin with.

Dexron is automatic trans fluid,,and many use it for PS. But is not normally used for this purpose.>>>Dan ( Are you sure the repair shop did not use Dexron in the steering system??)

Positively sure. They used 30 wt. The Dexron was in there for over a year. I'm guessing it came with my fluids from our old 4106, but I wanted to be sure that I wasn't missing something.

I thought you had a service manual.

I do. I've checked it. Still have absolutely no idea why it is in bay. Just thought I'd ask in case there was a need for it. Seems like there's not.

I was looking in one of my bays today and saw a quart of 30wt. oil.  I don't know why I have it.
