I have a chance to pick up an R24S Raycor filter(with housing) with a water separator really cheap..I understand this filter is 2 microns and is designed as a secondary filter.
Would this work on  my 8V71 with a primary filter as well?

Geoff

R24S Raycor is for small diesel engines, like a genset.  2 micron is overkill, a 10 micron filter is used on Detroits for secondary filtration, 20 microns for the primary filter.

Like Geoff said 2 micron is for a engine with a injection pump, even the Davco uses a 7 to 10 micron filter on the Detroit

I realize it is overkill. It's the same as the aftermarket filter on my ram Cummins engine when fuel cleanliness is a lot more critical. I guess my question is "will it work" as far as fuel throughput is concerned. I realize it's overkill but in my mind it just means you will have to change filters more often. And I like the fact it has a drain for water. I haven't checked but I presume you can get filters for it that are not as fine filtration-say 10 microns.

Maximum flow rate is 30 gph.

What's an 8V71 capable of pumping thru andback to the tank?

30 gph is not going to work a fuel pump on a 8v71 will return .9 GPM just on the return has to to cool the injectors
