how to hookup 50 amp service to the house

Trying to find the best way to hook the bus shore power(HUG BIG PLUG) to the house? about a 3 inch plug  pretty sure i am 50 amp< just got the bus home! should i have a power guy come and put a plug out side or is there a adapter out the where i can just run a huge extension cord out 2 the bus?? any ideas thanks john

If you are not too savvy in electrical, I would most certinly have an electrition run the receptical out from your

house. This way you won't go wrong.

You might want to tell the electrician it's for an RV hookup, you may end up sending 240 to the bus instead of 2 legs of 120.  A friend of mine is currently replaceing some of his fried electrics from having a 30 amp outlet installed on his house and it was set for 220.

The 50 amp RV outlets are 230v's between them, the 30a is not!

In a simple term, 50a RV outlets are 2 opposing legs of 120v "230v between them" or 2 legs of 50a 120v each.

The electrician that wired the outlet for my neighbor wired it the same way he would for a dryer and put it on a 220 breaker, it fried a lot of his system, I was lucky to have a friend that works as a mechanic for an rv dealership put in my 50 amp outlet a couple of years ago and it works fine for me, but the job the electrician did on my neighbors 30 amp outlet scared me and now my neighbor is having a problem trying to get the electrician to correct his outlet because the electician says he did it to code and that requires a 220 breaker, it's a mess.

It sounds to me like the neighbor didn't know enough about electrical systems to tell the electrician what he wanted/needed.

If the electrician installed a dryer recptacle wired for 220 then it sounds right to me as dryer receptacles are 220/230/240 volt.

Or maybe the RV was wired wrong.

I'm sure my neighbor will get it all worked out, I refered him to the guy that did my outlet.  My concern here would be to make sure the electrician clearly understood what was needed, apparently my neighbor told the guy to put in a 30 amp outlet and then left for work, leaving the electrician to do his job.  A 50 amp outlet is a completely different animal and, after looking at mine, I would have someone that is well versed in how to install it do it. I guess they are not that complicated but for an electrical rookie, I would want to have it done by an expert.

Electricians are human and sometimes make mistakes. A few years ago I did emergency repairs to a high end S&S (Monaco) before it went back for complete repair. The owner supplied a RV 30 amp box to the electrician and he assumed (wrongly) that since it looked like a welder or dryer receptacle he wired it to 240 volts. I didn't even check to find all the problems but just isolated the start batteries and alternator so it could be driven.
