Well Clifford Billie did not find it in my pocket or the laundry.  She was kind enough to sort through the trash yesterday and look for it.  Yes Bob I was thinking of just drilling a hole and putting in a cotter key to keep the steering wheel on. It is after all spring loaded from below the wheel for the turn signal function.  I have now decided that it is best to just locate a new steering wheel nut instead of looking for this one and if I find it I will put it in a very special place so I will always know where it is at.

I want to thank everyone for the help and suggestions.

Get a thread gage and check the number before buying a new nut.

I use a micrometer to measure the diameter and a thread gauge to check the pitch.

A  one inch diameter with a 20 per inch thread.

Knowing all that will not make the search any easier BUT it will help to be certain that the nut I get will fit.

Thanks for all the help

Nut heck I want to know how you got the steering wheel off. I tried to take mine off and almost broke my pullers. Nut came off easy. I ended up pulling it out at the joint instead. ;D

Well I have to confess that when I saw the subject line and Mel's name I had all sorts of thoughts like:
- the nut behind the wheel
- the nut holding the wheel
- a loose nut
- a wing nut

But I'm much too classy a guy to have ever posted any of those thoughts so I stayed silent.

the PO gave me the number to Jefferson Truck, Trailer and Bus. He stated that he as received many replacement parts from them.  I called them they actually had one windshield and all of the light lenses for my bus.  He may be worth a call.

Dave if you do a search of this site there is a thread from 2006 where I describe my method for removing the steering wheel after removing the nut.  Because the shaft is hollow I designed a part so my puller would work.  If you would like I can post a picture of it.  YES Bob I know that you are MUCH too classy to make any untoward comments and I appreciate that.  We are still thinking that it would be good to visit you north of the 49th if that is the correct reference. Thank you for being so reserved.  Dominic thank you for the info.  If I come up empty on my other efforts I may try them.  You have to remember the WHOLE COMMERCIAL WORLD wakes up tomorrow morning so I have lots of options. Once again thank you all for the responses. They say a bus conversion is never done BUT with this remodel the inside is as close as I would like and the drive train has been running strong for years now.

IDK if it matters now, but take a magnet with a long handle and run it behind the dash kick plate. That is where mine fell...but I saw it fall.
Good luck.

I ordered one from the place that eagle19952 referenced.  I already had them book marked but was hoping I could source one locally.  I guess I could if I knew the VIN of a semi truck that uses the same size nut because that is the only way the local truck dealers can find a part.  Gotta just love computers and keyboard jockeys.
