My 6v92ta did not come with a power steering pump, it had a blank, but luckily it had the blower end drive for a pump behind the block off plate.

My power steering gear is a Ross HFB70 Series that has the following specs :  Maximum operating pressure is 2000 PSI and Maximum flow rate is 8 GPM

Do the left rotation engines require a lefty pump when used on the blower drive?

Any one have a suggestion of a Vickers pump that would match those specs?

I have an ancient vickers pump that came off the 6v71 that was in the bus when i bought it but it has no markings on it except for the original Vickers logo from the dark ages.

Looking at the Vickers book it should be something like a VTM-??-60-??-20-?????

Thanks you!

The gear train on left and right hand engines rotate in the same direction, the difference is in the idler gear location.  Vickers pumps have a relief valve that sets the pressure so you can change the relief valve (maybe) and your pump will be correct.  I say maybe because I bought a new relief valve to change the pressure on mine, and couldn't get the old one out so I had to buy a new pump.  This leaves me with a 2,000 psi relief valve if anyone needs one.  I think my pump is a Vickers VC-20.  You would probably need the mount adapter and a drive adapter as well.  FWIW, and I have no idea of the impact of this, my pump is driven from an accessory drive that I am pretty sure rotates the opposite way compared to the blower drive gear.

Here is a picture of my power steering pump, tucked under the air compressor.  This is, of course, on an MCI engine.  You can also see the blanking plate covering the blower drive gear.

Edit:  Vickers V20 pumps are indeed "handed", but you can disassemble the pump and change the direction of rotation (google shows how, as does the Vickers web site).  FWIW, the blower drive gear rotates clockwise and the accessory drive gear (like mine) rotates counter-clockwise.

Strange how the DN50 alternator is belt driven. The position of the alternator looks the same length wise if it were direct driven.

From what I understand, about exactly the same length, but sits outboard and lower than a gear driven 50DN so it slides under the floor of the MC-5 (the floor height is very low on the 5's compared to the 9's).

Thank you bevans6!

Ok I found out my old pump from the 6v71 was a VTM27

Can I use a VTM42 on my 6v92? anyone know the difference? VTM27 , VTM28 , VTM42 ??

Take all the stuff to a good regional knowledgeable hydraulic pump retailer and have the experts walk you through it all?  The obvious concern is finding somebody who still has the older Detroit 2 Stroke knowledge.

This is what I did with my old 1974 Crown Supercoach.  It had, (if memory serves) a Victors, (Vikers?) (sp?) VT42 pump which was not correct for the 16K front axle TRW power assist power steering.  They knew.

The older gentleman, (logging truck experience) held my busted pump in his hands and after looking through all his extensive books told me he thought I did not have enough pump.  We got a bigger one.

Worked great.  That and new long custom hoses, a decent installation with proper purging and we were good to go.  Easy mounting on the Cummings, (sp?) Small Cam.  Very powerful good power assist steering.

Well I got my hands on a new VTM42 605520 which is 2000psi , 6 gallons per min , 5.5 gallons per min at 1500rpm and a new four slot coupler, so im going to give that a try.

Also got a new Bendix 750 air compressor and compressor drive coupling.

I have been working on removing all of the test station components that were on my "test stand" engine and adding all of the correct accessories.

Slowly making progress on getting the engine usable...

My engine had metal couplings rather than fiber, which I recall thinking at the time was possibly aftermarket, and an upgrade.

I have seen the fiber one and what looked like hard durometer rubber but never metal?

I went to borrow the one out of my old 6v71 only to find it did not have one, it was metal tab on metal tab... must have been that way fro a long time.

if you have to switch the side of the motor that the pump is on , you can reverse the direction of the pump by taking the back off,  turning the impellor over , I put a fire truck  8 v 71 in my mc8 a few years ago , has a different gear train, took the pump to acme truck parts  store,  they showed me what to do took about 5 minutes to do.

hmmm. i thought the fiber was the solution/upgrade.
less crap running thru the gear train post cat-a-stroffy :(
