I believe two reasons MCI might have liked it as is: some if any air going over the engine could help cool it. Just the circulation of whats available possibly.
Another delema may be to force road weather and or air down away versus any possible vacum effect of that rain, air.  I recall some have made some nice louvered doors in this exact type of project (better cooling ) for the big block.
Just some thoughts, good day there

I've never met Fred, but the man is AWESOME! I am incorporating quite a few of his ideas, and I love the scoops. He louvered all of his rear doors, and added cutouts in front of the radiators. Actually, the larger scoops will be good to have, but I learned a little cheat the first trip I drove the bus. Those scoops are wonderful to use when backing up. I refuse to ever use a camera...but using those scoops is my way of cheating... 8)
But I also think Scotts idea might work if thought through. I say this because I have the blower compartment door off, all of the little panels out and it's a bird's eye view of what might be possible. But I have never had any cooling problems...so I'm going to finish that compartment just the way it was...when all the components were oversized.

. . . but my opening are the 7x 14  not the 14 x 14 like it's supposed to have. Talked with Sam Caylor, he says I can just cut the hole out bigger without changing the fan shroud or cage housing. . .

Doug Pierre in Glendora, CA has an MC-5C that's been repowered with a 6V92T.  In the process, he cut out the squirrel cage openings to 14x14, but left the brace across the center.  It's been that way for over 10 years without any problems.
