CFM needs for 500 hp 8v92TA

My 8v92T is set to around 500 by Ken, and since I'm rebuilding the intake system, I'm purchasing a new filter. Actually I already did. The CFM on it is 1550. It's a Donaldson. I have scoured our forum here and the web and found CFM requirements for this engine all over the place from 1500 to 2000. What is it really? I couldn't find anything on donaldsons site higher than 1550 so that's what I bought. Is this enough?

You should be OK with your 1550.

My 92 is over 500 HP too. I don't have my book handy as I've been moving but it seems mine is 1600 CFM or maybe 1650. I never get black smoke and can pull 28 Inches boost, so that's plenty in my book.

My system was spec'ed out at Donaldson's in Phoenix. It has worked well since 2000.

According to Nelson Global published data:

8V-92TA
2100 RPM
435 HP
INTAKE = 1434 CFM
EXH = 3479 CFM

COMPARED TO A 360 HP INTAKE = 1250
EXH = 3032

So an increase of 75 hp = An increase of 184 CFM

If things were linear add another 75 HP and another 184 CFM = 1618 CFM

I would say "things are not linear" so you would be within the upper end of the limit with a 1550 CFM intake. Bear in mind that is at 2100 RPM which I am quite sure you will not be at most of the time if ever. (Unless you drive like I do).

If you wish to crunch some numbers:

INTAKE CFM = DISP X RPM X E
                    ---------------
                         C X 1728

C = cycle (1 for 2 cycle and 2 for 4 cycle)
E = efficiency 1.4 for turbo / 1.6 for turbo with aftercooler / 1.2 for scavneger engines with blowers
DISP = cu in

On my 1980 KW, I had an 8" intake for the 8V-92TA set at 435hp. Good Luck, TomC
